She completed her secondary education at St. Mary’s Convent and thereafter at St. Xavier’s Higher Secondary, Mapusa in 1982, ranking 5th in Goa in the Arts stream. Clarice Vaz, who has her roots in São Matias, Divar, was born in Kampala, Uganda in 1964. Her family returned to their ancestral home in Moira, Goa, in 1970. She completed her secondary education at St. Mary’s Convent and thereafter at St. Xavier’s Higher Secondary, Mapusa in 1982, ranking 5th in Goa in the Arts stream. Deeply influenced by Mother Teresa of Calcutta, she gave up a career in academics to follow her calling and joined the prestigious St. Martha’s College of Nursing, Bangalore. Here she excelled and ranked 2nd in the State of Karnataka in Nursing as well as Midwifery in 1986. She worked in Bangalore and Mumbai before settling down in1989, and moving to Muscat, Oman. She chose to be a full time mother and rekindled her childhood hobby of painting. In 1994, she moved back to Goa with her two young sons and worked as a nurse in Saligão.
Clarice is a self taught artist; she has started painting professionally as recently as 2011. Having participated in several group exhibitions, she has also held three solo shows (see www.claricevaz.com for more details). Her creative endeavours, be they painting or visual stories, are a means of self expression. She is also involved in many social activities in her village and in Goa.
