Each of the fifty thousand members of Cyclop joined the group one by one, having heard about it from a friend or colleague. Now, the group is a mix of well-known cycling champions who are setting and breaking records, as well as first-timers, people who have decided to break out of sedentary lifestyles and start riding.
It all began in 2012 when Malvika, a copywriter and cyclist, saw the need to connect newbies who wanted to buy a bike and start riding, with veteran cyclists who wanted to sell their cycles and upgrade to more sophisticated bikes. She created a Facebook group to connect the two groups, and thus, Cyclop was born.
As interest in cycling accelerated in India, Cyclop became the largest and perhaps the most active group for cyclists in the country. Now, it’s a place to participate in the cycling culture in India, engage in impassioned discussions and, of course, buy and sell cycles.
While running the community, Malvika noticed that many members needed not just cycles and accessories but also knowledge and guidance to start cycling and improve one’s experience on the road or trails. And so, she and co-founder, Neeraj, started Cyclop.in, an ecommerce portal for cyclists, where one can buy cycles and accessories with expert guidance. They also introduced a popular bike-shipping service, perhaps India’s only shipping service that focuses on cycles.
Cyclop and Cyclop.in are doing their bit to contribute to the rise of a cycling culture in India. As a community, Cyclop is the voice of the cyclists of India. With the support of India’s growing number of cyclists and a million exciting projects (like this book!), Cyclop hopes to continue to be a catalyst for cycling enthusiasts.
