He has written four books on these subjects: Sustainable Mining Practices – A Global Perspective; From Landfill Gas to Energy – Technologies and Challenges; both published by Taylor and Francis, United Kingdom; Liquid and Solid Waste Management – Waste to Wealth, published by Prentice Hall India; and Ecology and Environment, published by TERI Press. He has presented over 50 papers at several international conferences on the subjects of mining, water and waste management.
Keith Olson has worked, lived and studied in many locations through the years, the majority in mid-U.S.A. near Chicago, centred between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, where the continental climate comes with wide swings of temperature and precipitation. He also has lived in other countries and travelled extensively to all continents except Antarctica.
During his travels and decades teaching science and math, he developed a world view of respecting the environment the world around, including the necessity of addressing climate change. He has been and continues to be a member of several environmental organizations including one that specifically addresses the impact of climate on our lives. One significant activity of his is preserving a natural grassland, a sink for atmospheric carbon. He also lives a conservative lifestyle, therein reducing his impact on the environment. He usually gets around by walking and using public transportation. He and his wife have a small family and maintain a small environmental footprint, avoiding waste, recycling, and keeping low demand on utilities. However, no person can avoid environmental impact. Even heating water for a cup of tea takes energy which, unless from green energy, will produce some greenhouse gases, thereby contributing to climate change.
