The story of Elizabeth Isaac begins with a tragedy. Before her father’s untimely death in a calculated honour killing by her own maternal grandfather and great grandfather, Elizabeth vows to become a woman of substance to her father. From a place where such aspirations for women are considered to be mysterious, she promised him that she would leave a mark in this world.
Beautiful and brighter than most, Elizabeth did not want to end up like the other girls in the village of Aruvithra in the Kottayam district of Kerala; like girls who did not achieve anything meritorious in life. However, even after graduating with flying colours in a local college, she is rejected by the education institutes, where she applies for a job. The only reason being the lack of funds as “donation” to the institutes.
In order to support her sick and widowed mother, she perseveres to find a job. Elizabeth moves to Mumbai in search of greener pastures with the help of one of her old classmates. There, she gets appointed as a secretary to a handsome boss, who falls head over heels in love with her. Will Elizabeth keep her promise to her father? Will she reciprocate her boss’ feelings?
Unravelling a one-of-a-kind narrative, The Litmus Test of God is bound to transport you through the vivid description in flawless language about the scenic beauty of God’s Own Country and the enchanting rubber trees. Elizabeth’s story will leave an everlasting impression in the mind of the reader about the infinite love between a mother and a daughter.
The Litmus Test of God author Katherine Joseph hails from the district of Kottayam in Kerala. After completing her initial education in the state, she moved to Mumbai, where she continued to study. She was inspired to gain justice for people in distress and that very purpose motivated her to pursue Law as a profession.
The Litmus Test of God is her first novel which started with her keen observation of injustice in every field in the society that she lived in. The varying characters appearing in this book are part and parcel of her society. Through this book, Joseph hopes to send a social message against the existing practice of condemning the have-nots by the haves and the powerful. The author’s endeavour is to bridge the gap between the rich and the poor.
