“This book may make you cry, make you fall in love, or maybe even contemplate possibilities wilder than your wildest imaginations.” Storm Clouds at the Back of My Mind is not for everyone; it is not a story of the ages. This book is for you and for me. All my feelings, thoughts and longings, fragmented and whole, await you within these pages— an extension of my consciousness, my very being. I have given material form to all my f....

Introduction

This is a tribute to all that I’ve endured and to all that I’ve contemplated.

May this serve you as a reminder to feel when you’re feeling numb, to fight harder when you’re bested, and above all, to love when you’re feeling barren.

The human experience can be summarized by our struggles against the one inescapable truth of life, mortality.

Even though we know that someday we must perish, we let that not hinder our efforts to love as hard, fight as fiercely and live as vividly as possible.

This struggle gives our lives meaning.

I have endeavoured, to the very best of my capacity, to take this very essence of our beings and put it into words.

This book may make you cry, make you fall in love or maybe even contemplate possibilities wilder than your wildest imaginations.

I hope reading it changes you the way writing it changed me. I hope this metamorphosis helps you live a little harder against the endless odds.

Live to smile another day.

Trigger warning: Contains tones of self-harm, suicide, substance abuse, trauma, alcoholism, and other depressing elements.

I know how much you miss him and how much you loved him before he died.

I saw it in your eyes when you came to bed tonight. I know how fond you are of his name. That’s what you called me by because you were having nightmares in your sleep, and I held you tight.

So tell me now, do I remind you of him? Or does he still, in his afterlife, haunt you in my love?

Somewhere in the heart of a dying star, there’s a light that I once saw in your eyes.
