Chapter - 2

BOND

Every day in the late afternoon I used to sit in my balcony with a cup of tea. And every day I used to notice an elderly couple walk down the street holding hands and supporting each other to the park just beside our house. They always sat on the same bench. Not a single day did I see them changing places.

The man looked above ninety years old and a little bent down. The lady seemed to be more than eighty years of age. Summer, winter, spring they had the same routine. They would also sit with an umbrella during the rainy days. I enjoyed looking at them more than I enjoyed my tea and it became a daily routine for me to watch them too. They seemed to be so much in love even at this age. I don’t know what they talked about. But I waited for their return home after sitting there for almost an hour. I could watch them have trouble in getting up from the bench but they somehow managed.

I got so curious to know more about them that one day I decided to go and talk with the couple. But a hesitation overcame me as after all I did not have any idea as to how will they would react to a stranger. But my curiosity knew no bounds. So one day I made up my mind to go and talk to them whatever might happen. I was the age of their grandchild and even if they refused to talk to me it wouldn’t degrade me in any way. Their was no harm in keeping to themselves the way they wanted to.

So one day I followed them to the bench. I had an apprehension that they won’t refuse my intervention. I went there and asked them if I could sit beside them. Both of them smiled at me and agreed. I touched their feet and they blessed me with a smiling face. It looked so beautiful to see their wrinkled smiling faces.

I told them that I had been following them for months and felt eager to talk to them. The man laughed and said that what they have done that a young girl like me kept on following them. He introduced themselves to be Mr. and Mrs. Banerjee and I told them that my name was Titlli. They lived just one block away from our house. I told them if I can call them grandpa and grandma. They happily agreed

and said that they had a grandson and grand daughter of my age.
