‘The Way that We Are’, is Priyam Acharya’s second collection of free verses. Developed and written almost entirely during the year of the pandemic, every work in the compilation offers a perspective into the vulnerable side of human beings – making us the way that we, are by touching upon themes like urban loneliness, complicated relationships, spiritual questions, struggles with self-care and mental wellness. THE WAY THAT WE ARE…

I have spent countless days,

Counting the contours of the clouds,

That lined my lonely skies…!

I remember you telling me that you saw the same contours,

In your skies as well…!

And here we are today –

Away from the rubble of our reality,

Flying higher than we could have ever imagined…!

All that tied us down while we were there,

Now looks so small from these dizzying heights!

Our flight has brought us to where we are now,

Defying the laws of gravity,

And the laws of our worlds!

How I wish we had gotten here earlier!

After incalculable moments of separation,

Living in a state of disorientation with our realities –

We have found calm in each other, at last!

We are here – where no one can find us!

Because it is impossible for anyone to be in love,

The way that we are…!

The passion. The innocence. The faith. The resilience –

It’s nobody’s cup of tea, but ours!

It’s just the way that we are!

CHASING PERFECTION…

I remember those days of my life,

When I was still discovering my love for pencil drawings.

I could barely hold the pencil in my little hands,

But was so full of zest to draw whatever I saw around me

And show it around to everyone!

Those messy lines and imperfect proportions!

And everyone had so much to say –

“Why don’t you darken the lines around here?”

“Why don’t you straighten it there?”

“The curve isn’t neat enough!”

And there I would go on with full zest –

To chase perfection from someone else’s eyes.

Erasing out my work causing the paper to eventually tear out!

Destroying my own work,

In a bid to make it worthy of someone else’s praises.

Years after that I have now realized –

Art is not about perfection.

It is just a reflection of my existence.

Whether people understand it or not.

Whether they like it or not.

As long as it defines me

Nothing else matters.

THE VANDALS

What transpired between us?

What ruined our picture perfect?

What went wrong for us?

We blamed those around us –

For destroying everything pure and innocent between us!

They were just like those mindless vandals,

Who can’t tolerate anything that is

Beautiful. Unspoiled. Perfect.

Just because they are never entitled to it,

Or lucky enough to have it.

But why did we let them in?

Why did we do nothing to stop them?

I’m sure we could have.

Who were those vandals?

Demons perhaps?

Some known to us.

Some of whom I saw for the first time.

But most of those were living within us.

Love is not a storm or a meteor that suddenly hits our lives to change everything in a moment’s span, is it? It is just the process – that happens over a period of time when two individuals become inseparable, indispensable to each other’s existence. And it is that process of realization which is way more euphoric than the actual moment when people fall in love!
