Sukanya Badhwar
Sukanya Badhwar, born on 16 February 1930 in Lahore and brought up in Kashmir, was tutored by her maternal grandfather up to graduation.
After the Baramulla Raid by Pakistan on 24 October 1948, her family migrated to Srinagar, losing all their belongings.
She joined Women’s Self Defence Corps and received arms training. She finished her MA in Economics from Punjab University, Solan, in 1951. She worked in USAID in Afghanistan, after which she worked as an Information Officer in Ghana High Commission from 1962 to 1987.
Her botanist father taught her floriculture, photography and journalism. Her illustrated articles appeared regularly in the Illustrated Weekly of India, Kashmir, Young India and Asia of Saigon – now Ho Chi Minh City.
Her poems were published in a monthly called Poesie India, which awarded her a certificate of merit.
She married an Industrialist from Kaithal in Haryana on 12 August 1954. Though one of six daughters, maximum love was showered on her by her parents and sisters, older and younger. Her husband’s family and friends also gave her unconditional love.
Her search for spiritualism started at the age of eight; she wanted to be a nun and tried various techniques without satisfaction. She was disillusioned after attending a meeting of the World’s Saints of “Modern thought & Ancient Culture.”
On 3 December 1957, she was introduced to Transcendental Meditation, which provided her with satisfaction. She practices it twice daily.
