Meandering through Bengaḷūru A Ramble in Time and Place

Author Name: Shridhar G. Rao | Format: Paperback | Genre : Travel | Other Details

This book is a meander through Bengaluru, a journey where curiosity leads the way. Stories, historical fact, science and legend weave a fascinating tapestry bringing alive Bengaluru from its humble inception to its present-day avatar of a bustling metropolis.

The journey, beginning with Kempegauda and his Pete, follows tenuous threads in time and place, snaking out to the four towers of Kempegauda and beyond to a Bengaluru with an indelible imprint of the British. At every turn is an unlikely story about the mundane and what lies hidden in what we routinely see. Who would imagine that the ubiquitous Iyengar Bakery was born out of an Englishman’s sweet tooth and his craving for bread? Or that Tippu’s prowess with rockets is commemorated in the Wallops Island facility of NASA?

Unique in its approach and complemented by beautiful illustrations, ‘Meandering Through Bengaluru’ promises to be a fascinating journey of discovery for some and a rekindling of nostalgia for others.

Shridhar G. Rao

Shridhar is a first-time author, writing about a topic close to his heart. An alumnus of IIT Kanpur, he had a successful corporate career that took him to various places in India and abroad. A firm believer of ‘there is more to life than work’, he retired early to pursue a variety of interests ranging from photography to farming.

Shridhar was born in Bengaluru but schooled in Ooty, returning home to the city only during term breaks. His love for Bengaluru was perhaps shaped by the much-awaited visits during the holidays, when he explored iconic spots, eating places and experiences. Like so many other old-time Bangaloreans, there is a yearning for what has now passed and a need to frame the rolled-up painting of memory. This book is his fond tribute to a great city.

Shridhar is currently a resident of South Bengaluru.
