Drug money strikes the sustainable economy of all the distressed countries drastically. No country in the world slips away from the tainted hands of illicit drugs. The ill-gotten money generated from the drug trafficking business leads parallel economy and negatively impacts the economic system of an afflicted country. In the Indian context, as India is wedged between the world’s two largest illicit opium-producing regions, the Golden Crescent (Afghanistan, Iran and Pakistan) and the Golden Triangle (Myanmar, Thailand and Laos), it is sternly afflicted with the drug menace. India acts as both, transit and destination of the drugs produced in these historical regions. Meantime, India too has an extensive history of licit and illicit production of opium. Despite the legal cultivation of opium is highly monitored by the central agency, the illicit diversion could not be ruled out. An enormous amount of money is involved in the illicit drug business. To deliver the unseen facts of the drug trade in India, an attempt has been achieved to research in this area and now it has come up in a book format. This book entitled, ‘Narconomics - Metrics of Illicit Opium Trade in India'  brings the dark business of opium trade in India into the light. It explicates the ways of estimation of drug money generated from distinct sources such as illicit diversion of opium, trade after converting opium into heroin, illicit opium cultivation and seizure of drugs.

Hailing from Kanyakumari, South India, Dr. J. Sasi Kumar, a young scholar actively engages in extensive researches in the area of drugs and crime, which earned him a gold medal for presenting the best research paper in the international conference on exploring the linkage of drugs and crime. After completion of B.Sc. in Chemistry, he secured M.Sc. in Criminology and Criminal Justice Science with university second rank. He completed his doctoral degree in Criminology at Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Tirunelveli under the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D) Fellowship Scheme-2010, Ministry Home Affairs, GOI. He started his career in 2011 as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Criminology and Police Administration JHA Agarsen College, affiliated with the University of Madras.  In 2017, he joined as a Lecturer in the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Training Academy, New Delhi, where he imparts training and conducts various in-house training programmes for the officers of CBI and State Police across the country. He also prepared handbooks for CBI Investigating Officers. He published more than ten research articles in peer-reviewed national and international reputed journals. For honoring his remarkable services in teaching and research, the National Institute of Entrepreneurship Development, Tamil Nadu bestowed him with the Young Educator and Scholar Award.
