Sparks from the Hearth, my first book of short
stories, was an ambitious attempt to pick up sparks
from a dying fire and pass them on to a younger
generation of new dreams and aspirations. It has
been well received.
I wanted to take a lull after going through the agony
and ecstasy of bringing forth my first book. The
creative force has been at work in me and I realised
the incubation period was over; it was time to hatch a
novelette. Sarpakavu is born out of a compelling urge
to place love above faith. The inspiration came from
my mother who clung to her traditional Christian faith
till the last breath.
My mother had made compromises with her faith at
the time of my marriage as my wife hailed from a
Hindu family. A storm raged in my mother's mind
when it was the turn of my younger daughter who was
her most beloved member in our family. The
celebration of my daughter's marriage at the Church
was followed by a ceremony in the Hindu tradition. My
mother insisted on climbing the Kathir Mantapam and
shocked everyone by chanting the mantras and
showering raw rice on the couple. I wondered how
she could reject her faith and accept the tenets of an
altogether different religion. "Faith, deprived of love, is
fake." Her words still ring in my ears. Sarpakavu is a
journey of adventure from myth to spirituality, love
conquering all other sentiments in life. Prayer is not
torture of the body and mind; it is celebration of love.
The narrative techniques used in the story carry a
high order of credibility as many things which
happened in real life have been recast in the crucible
of art. The beauty of art is that it creates a meaning
and purpose for life. An artist has the bounden duty to
uphold the innate goodness of man, no matter evil
wins or fails in real life. The reader is expected to build
on the tips given and read between the lines as the
characters are fictitious and their dialogues, designed
to blend fact and fiction. The story is set against CMS
College, Kottayam, and later on, the scenes are
shifted to the suburbs of the town. A journey
undertaken from the personal to the universal should
not wear out at the end of the day. You are invited to
partake.
Go slow, lest you miss the woods for the trees!
