Dr. Vinay Raykar

Bravery seemed to be the greatest strength of Vinay! The earliest experience of his extreme bravery was when he was about fourteen years old studying in school at Ugar, a small place in North Karnataka, India.

He used to bicycle from his home to the school which was about ten kilometers. The roads were muddy and daily twice he had to cross over a half kilometer bridge over river Krishna which of course had become routine.

It was rainy season and the wet road mud would enter his bicycle making riding difficult. That particular day after finishing the school he was struggling to paddle as slush in mudguard was slowing down the wheel rotation. On slope when he reached near the bridge and saw river swollen and the murky water had submerged the entire bridge leaving only tip of the guard stones visible.

Oh he had to return to the school, park his bicycle and go to railway station to reach home at Kudchi. To avoid the exertion required to push the muddy bicycle he decided to go up to the water wash the bicycle as he was already on the downward slope and return to school.

However, when he entered the river water on the bridge (he was still on the seat) he experienced the rear wheel had become free and was giving smooth ride! Without winking he started peddling further in gushing strong current of monsoon rain water to cross over! The water was up to his torso and he was totally focused on the other end the bridge. People at both ends were shouting ‘want to die’, ‘he is sure dead’ etc.

He quickly made it to the opposite bank of the river only to be caught by the elders and was thrashed!

However, even at his age of sixty five the bravery is still intact.

Just before this Himalayan expedition, he made solo trips to Cambodia, Vietnam, Israel and Egypt. Being avid traveler, he has almost toured India and to about thirty five countries.

Born in 1953, struggled to get through higher secondary exams but excelled later with Masters in Social work, Bachelors in Law and PhD in Industrial relations. He was HR specialist and was chief of HR in Tata organization. He quit and took up a new profession, being Consultant in Organization Development. Quit all businesses in 2014 and took up painting, Carpentry, Carving, cooking, rain water harvesting, photography, videography, growing organic vegetables and fruits, writing etc.

This is his second book, the first one is ‘Two females who…’
