Studies on Mechanical, Electrical and Thermal Properties of Compatibilized PLA\ABS Blends Reinforced with Wood Flour

Author Name: R Anandharaj*, S Soundararajan | Format: Paperback | Genre : Educational & Professional | Other Details
Poly lactic acid (PLA) bio-polymer (60%) was blended with acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) (40%) and filled with wood flour (0, 10, 20%) using a twin screw compounding extruder and a suitable compatibilizer i.e., glycerol, is also incorporated into that mixture at a percentage of 4% respectively. Test specimens were prepared by using an injection molding machine for mechanical, electrical and thermal properties as per ASTM standards and the properties were evaluated. The impact strength of PLA/ABS blend was increased when 10% wood flour was reinforced and then decreased when wood flour (20%) was added. The thermal property of heat deflection temperature was increased due to ABS materials. The electrical properties were decreasing due to ABS and wood flour when added to PLA. Since wood flour has polar nature and hygroscopic material. ABS also has unsaturated double bonds in the butadiene units, so the dielectric strength and arc resistance were decreased. The main objective of this paper is reducing the cost of the PLA by adding ABS and wood flour. The bio-polymer can be used in many commodity applications and reduce the waste of petro- chemical based plastics and non-bio-degradable plastics.
