The Urban Edges

Author Name: Dr. Nandini S. Kulkarni | Format: Hardcover | Genre : Arts, Photography & Design | Other Details
The book / Monograph is an effort to evolve and present a humane approach for planning urban fringes / peri urban areas in Indian cities. In order to promote growth in India, various governments have proactively marked many areas as Special Economic Zone (SEZs) as well as transport or Cargo hubs (primarily for meeting large scale supply chain management issues). However, both these initiatives demand that large land area can be acquired for various purposes related to SEZs and Cargo hubs. However, there is often resistance to these SEZs as well as cargo hubs by the local communities (that are directly affected). Moreover, in many states forcible land acquisitions have met with concerted opposition from the societal concerns, and in certain cases have been abandoned as a result. Though state authorities are required to compensate previous owners for the value of land and dwellings, such compensation, even if paid in full, is remarkably inadequate to the loss of land & non-land assets, and also the loss of livelihood opportunities along with the disruption to traditional rural life.
