Nargis Mithani
Nargis Mithani (Merchant) is a sexagenarian who grew up in an Ismaili Khoja joint family of 21 members in what was then erstwhile Bombay. She realized how enjoyable and meaningful food was as a part of celebrations, life passages, and festivities. The kitchen was the epicentre of the home and managed by her four sisters-in-law and the kitchen help. The family members at ‘Salim Mahal’, her ancestral bungalow, were foodies.
Growing in Mumbai, she relished the finger-licking street food. She prepared chaats and snacks frequently, and her nieces and nephews lapped them up. With her marriage arranged, came the expectations of being a dutiful daughter-in-law who would be an ace cook. It was then that she brushed up her cooking skills under the watchful eyes of her sisters-in-law.
Nargis has been a volunteer and philanthropist in her own little way and has touched people’s lives in ways big and small. She is an ace storyteller with a razor-sharp memory. Her zest for life and an insatiable appetite to learn and keep abreast of current affairs is what sets her apart. She now resides in Bengaluru with her husband, working as a content writer, volunteering and enjoys what she is best at ‘cooking’.
