Today, due to poverty, destitution, unemployment and debt, people who once used to be engaged as agriculture workers are making a beeline to urban areas to work as seasonal migrant labourers. In India, 310 million people are reported as migrants (Census 2001). The situation is getting more horrifying with every fourth person a tribal, every seventh a Harijan, and again, every fourth person belonging to an economically backward community without any source of livelihood.
