Submitted to Contest #2 in response to the prompt: 'Write about the moment your character decided to write their own story.'

Moushmi decided to write the story of her life. It was the story of a woman set in the canvass and background of urban Bengal. Now Moushmi's home in Kolkata was located at 10, Jorasanko Road where Rabindranath Tagore's ancestral home is located. Moushmi wrote about how she laughed and played in her childhood. It was a happy life, a happy story-with a few twists and all tweaked by the paint brush of Moushmi's creativity. Moushmi's childhood days were set in the days of the partition of Bengal when Rabindranath Tagore gave a call to celebrate the 1905 Raksha Bandhan with especial gusto to protest the partition. Like all Bengalis of that era Moushmi responded to Rabindranath Tagore's call enthusiastically. She tied rakhis on all the boys of her neighborhood and they affectionately gave her lovely gifts due to a doting sister. The same was true for all the girls and boys of her locality. She grew especially close to a boy, Tapan, and the two came to a mutual agreement that they were de facto brother and sister and would always stay together in life come what may. Tapan gave sisterly gifts to Moushmi and Moushmi responded with equal warmth. Their childhood days passed off happily like a dream. Then somewhat into adulthood they like many Bengalis of that era got separated in the partition of Bengal. Moushmi for many years would wonder where her doting brother was with the sisterly warmth of an equally doting sister. Slowly the years passed and slowly the years became decades. But there was no trace of Tapan. Tapan unknowingly to her had begun a hunt of his own for his sister. Meanwhile, Tapan had crossed over into the wrong side of the border into what was to later become East Pakistan and still later to Bangladesh. Moushmi too searched in vain for Tapan and there seemed to be no meeting ground. The years dragged on but there was no sight of the other for each. Both had practically given up hope of ever meeting the other. They married and both beget children and slowly the children became grandchildren. Still there was no sight of the other. Tapan, meanwhile, with the help of a friend had got a job in Pakistan after retirement and had shifted there. Moushmi too was now 65 years and practically given up all hope of finding Tapan. Then, of course, there were cross border difficulties now of visa formalities between warring India and Pakistan separating each from the other. Then through a amazing coincidence and a mix of the Russian program Missing You Moushmi learnt that Tapan was in Pakistan. But where?. Moushmi had no answer to that question. But, after what seemed an eternity hope rekindled within Moushmi of finding her long lost brother. Meanwhile Tapan too through a mutual friend learnt that Moushmi was still in Kolkata. Then Moushmi traversed the length of India by Geetanjali Express and came to Bombay and from there took the Punjab Mail and reached Amritsar searching for her brother. She reached Wagah and enquired about Tapan but drew a blank. Then through a friend she learnt that the prevailing Indian government of the Vajpayee era had started a train to Pakistan, Samjhauta Express. On a hunch she took the train and reached Lahore. Lahore became Karachi but still there was no trace of Tapan. She came back to India disappointed and took a beautiful holiday shack set in the paddy fields of Punjab and determined that after having come so long she would find her brother. Meanwhile Tapan too took the Samjhauta Express and crossed over into India and reached Wagah. At the Wagah checkpoint he too enquired about Moushmi but like for Moushmi the answer still seemed to be a question mark. Now both were in rural Punjab. Then through a chance meeting with a friend Moushmi learnt that Tapan too was in rural Punjab!. It all seemed touch and go. So near, yet so far. Tapan too soon came to know that Moushmi was in Amritsar. It all seemed now or never!. Now both independently enquired at the Wagah checkpoint about the other and learnt that both were in India. Now seemed the time!. Then, one day as she was meandering her way through the bazaars of Amritsar Moushmi learnt that Tapan too had taken a house in a nearby street. Then after looking up on the internet she learnt that Tapan was living in a nearby street and after further research came to know about her long lost brother's whereabouts!. She reached her long lost brother's house and Tapan was dumb founded to find his sister at the door. The too had finally met after so many years! They informed their families about the happy news and everybody met and chatted late into the night. Then, all of them took the Geetanjali Express and reached Kolkata, took neighboring houses and settled down and so this way Moushmi's story ended.
