Submitted to Contest #2 in response to the prompt: 'Write a story about your character finding a mysterious message hidden in an old book.'

It was a rainy afternoon, and sixteen-year-old Tara was stuck inside her grandmother’s old house. With no electricity and her phone battery dead, she wandered up to the attic to pass the time. The attic was dusty and full of boxes labeled “Old Stuff.”

As she looked around, something caught her eye—a worn-out leather book with no name on the cover. It looked old and mysterious. Tara picked it up, brushed off the dust, and opened it.

Inside, the pages were filled with neat handwriting. At first, it looked like a diary or someone’s personal notes. But then she saw something strange written on one page:

“If you’ve found this, then you’re the one meant to finish what I started.”

Tara frowned. The next page mentioned a name—Anaya—and something about a dream and a forest behind a chapel. That name shocked her. Her grandmother’s name was Anaya. And there really was a small forest behind the village chapel.

Flipping through more pages, she saw drawings, maps, and mysterious sentences like:

“Look beneath the stone that doesn’t belong.”

It seemed like a secret message or treasure hunt.

The next morning, while her grandmother was resting, Tara walked to the forest near the chapel, carrying the book. She followed a path until she found a group of stones. Most of them were round, but one looked different—flat and smooth. She pushed it aside and found a rusted tin box hidden underneath.

Inside was a note, written in the same handwriting:

“You found it. But this is only part of the truth. The rest is where the stars touch the water.”

Tara was curious and confused. What did it mean? She returned home with the book and the box, and that evening, she asked her grandmother about it.

“Grandma,” Tara said, “did you write this book?”

Her grandmother looked at it and smiled softly. “Yes,” she said. “I was your age when I started following those clues. It was something my aunt left for me. But I got scared and stopped. I never finished it.”

Tara’s eyes widened. “But what does the message mean?”

“I never found out,” her grandmother replied. “I hoped one day someone braver would finish what I started. Maybe that someone is you.”

Tara couldn’t stop thinking about the words “where the stars touch the water.” She thought about the nearby lake and guessed that it could be the place.

The next morning, just before sunrise, she rode her bicycle to the lake. The sky was still dark, and stars sparkled above the calm water. As she walked along the edge of the lake, she noticed a group of stones arranged like an arrow. She followed it to a big willow tree. On its bark, there was a symbol of a star above waves.

She touched the symbol, and to her surprise, a small wooden box slid out from a hole in the tree. Inside was an old silver locket and a folded piece of paper.

The paper read:

“The message is this—some mysteries are meant to connect us across time. If you’ve made it here, you’ve unlocked more than a puzzle. You’ve found your courage. Use it well.”

Tara held the locket tightly and smiled. She didn’t know everything yet, but she felt proud. She had discovered something special—a secret from her grandmother’s past, and maybe something important about herself too.

Tara stood by the willow tree, holding the locket in one hand and the message in the other. The early morning sun began to rise behind her, casting golden light over the lake. A gentle breeze made the leaves rustle, like soft whispers from the past.

She looked down at the small wooden box and smiled. It wasn’t just a puzzle anymore. It was something deeper—like a bridge between her and her grandmother, and perhaps even further back, to someone else who had written those words long ago. The mystery wasn’t about treasure. It was about finding courage, connection, and curiosity.

Over the next few weeks, Tara visited her grandmother often. They sat together and read through the journal, this time slowly, page by page. Her grandmother’s eyes would sometimes glisten with memories, sometimes laughter, and sometimes silence.

One day, Tara asked, “Grandma, why didn’t you come back to it after all these years?”

Her grandmother took a deep breath and said, “I guess I thought life moved on. But maybe, deep down, I was hoping someone like you would pick it up someday. And now you have.”

That night, Tara returned to the attic. She opened the journal once more, turned to the last page, and gently added her own message in neat handwriting:

“I followed the clues. I found the locket. I found the courage. But this story doesn’t end with me. If you’re reading this, then it’s your turn now. Find the lake where stars touch water. The journey is yours to continue.”

She placed the locket inside the journal, closed it carefully, and tied a red ribbon around it.

Then she tucked the book back into the same dusty corner between the old newspapers and photo frames—just as she had found it.

Maybe one day, years later, another curious soul would wander into the attic on a rainy day, stumble upon the book, and begin their own adventure.

As Tara left the attic, she smiled. The secret was safe. The mystery lived on.

And so did the magic.
