Submitted to Contest #3 in response to the prompt: 'Your character wakes up in a different world. What do they do?'

This place looks familiar to me but difficult to identify. I can't remember how I reached here.

The last thing that I saw before I woke up in this strange world was a flash of light.

There is a pin drop silence, looks like it's night time and I am lying under a tree with no clue where to go.

The moment I got up, I can see next to me is an empty road might be connecting to some place where I can find other people.

I started walking. The street lights are blinking, the insects are buzzing and I can hear the noise of my footsteps.

After walking for 15 minutes, I heard a small kid crying. I ran towards the place from where the sound was coming. Since it was dark, I could hardly see anything.

As I reached closer, I could see the kid sitting in the middle of the road. He saw me and stopped crying. He started walking towards me.

In order to make him feel comfortable, I tried to give a smile. I held his hands and asked him how he reaced this place.

The kid took some time to answer. He said that he was sitting under a tree and can't remember anything before that.

The small boy looks terrified by the strange situation we are in. A place full of loneliness, darkness and negativity. I felt extremely sorry for him. He reminds me of my younger brother whom I lost in a road accident.

My younger brother was the closest person to me. We used to spend a lot of time playing together.

The way the kid looks around with curiosity trying to find answers very closely resembles my brother.

I made him feel comfortable and we both started walking in the middle of the road. When I turned back the only thing I could see is darkness.

We started having conversation. I asked him about his favourite game. It turns out that he is a big fan of cricket. I promised him that if we made it into the real world, I'll play a cricket match with him.

He said that he likes to bat and wants me to be the bowler. My brother used to do the same with me.

After waking for another 15 minutes I saw a girl of my age sitting in a car. The headlights were off. The engine was cold. Her hands were on the steering wheels and her long hair covering her face.

At this moment anyone could be terrified by the situation. However for some reason I was curious to know who is she.

To keep the kid safe, I asked him to wait in the middle of the road under the blinking street light.

As I approached the car, the girl pulled her hair from the sides of her face and tucked it behind her ears, rubbed her eyes and started looking at me.

She looked scared. As I moved closer to her car's window I could see a letter kept on the passenger seat.

She asked me what was the last thing I remember before reaching here. To which I replied "a flash of light". She immediately opened the door of the passenger seat and asked me to sit.

Before I get inside her car, I decided to bring the kid with me as well. The moment I was going towards the kid, the girl moved her hand through the window to stop me.

She asked me what was the last thing the kid remembers before reaching here. I replied "Sitting under a tree".

The girl immediately stopped me from going towards the kid who was just few metres away from the car.

She took the letter in her hand which was kept next to her and gave it to me. She asked me to read it.

The letter says "Welcome to the game. Your task is to find the people who remembers the flash. They are your friends from the real world. Those who never saw the flash are the imposters created to kill you. To complete this game you have to kill all the imposters you encounter."

The letter, even if it makes no sense to me, looked real. But what if the kid forgot to share the information about the flash? What if he is someone closer to me in the real world?

Before I gathered my thoughts, the girl started the car and accelerated it towards the kid.

It reminded me of my past trauma and I failed to resist myself from saving the kid. I ran towards him, held him in my arms and jumped on the other side of the road.

I hugged him and made him feel safe. The moment I hugged him I started feeling unconscious. I couldn't move myself and a flash of light appears...
