Once there was a person living in a small village of Balrampur District of Utter Pradesh. His name was Ramcharan. His parents were very poor. They decided to educate their child, so that he could become an officer. But due to poverty his parents were unable to educate him after Matric. He was also wanted to study after matric but could not. He started to work as a labourer in a factory of Sudhan Baboo. Ramcharan was very intelligent, and he understood the work very well within a few days.
One day he was working on machine and Sudhan Baboo came to the factory for observation. When he came across Ramcharan, he observed that Ramcharan was working with his greatest zeal. On the next day Sudhan Baboo called Ramcharan to his office and told him that he would work from today as a foreman. He was surprised to listen this that how it is possible because he joined the factory few days back. But it was the award of his hard work and dedication towards organization.
Whenever Ramcharan was getting time, he was reading books related to management and the success story of famous personalities. Once he was reading one book, he came across to Fredric Winslow Taylor, a famous management expert who had given Scientific Management. After reading the story of F.W. Taylor, he decided to do something bigger in the organization and wanted to uplift the organization at National as well as international level. He was very much impressed by F.W. Taylor. On the next day, he came to Sudhan Baboo, and he introduced his plan to him. After the study and analysis of plan Sudhan Baboo gave permission to Ramcharan to implement his plan. Ramcharan told the workers and the other foremen about scientific management. Firstly, he told all foremen to think scientifically. They had not to follow the traditional methods. Secondly there should be complete harmony between the management and the workers. This requires the ‘Mental Revolution’ on the part of both management and workers. Third, he told all the activities done by different people must be carried on with a spirit of mutual cooperation and fourth, he explained that there should be development of each and every person to his/her greatest efficiency and prosperity. These four principles of Scientific Management he explained to everyone started work by implementing these principles. He and his fellow colleagues observed the work efficiency of workers and foremen had been increased. At the end of the year the profit of Sudhan Baboo’s factory was increased by 5% in comparison to previous year. Sudhan Baboo was very happy with the work of Ramcharan and his team. He announced 2% increase in the salary and wages of every employee from 1st April of that year. And promotion was given to Ramcharan and one of his colleague Tuka Ram. They were promoted to the post of superintendent. All the employees and workers were feeling happy to get 2% increase in the salary and wages. But Ramcharan and Tuka Ram were not so happy with this, because the results were not according to their expectation. Workers as well as machines were not giving output according to their expectations. They were expecting every worker should give maximum contribution according to their capability. Ramcharan had given extension to his team by involving one more superintendent Mansukh Pandey and two foremen Hanshika and Anurag Verma. The team of five members decided to divide the factory work in two categories (i) Planning Department and (ii) Production Department.
In Planning Department they introduced four planning officers, (a) Route Clerk, who decides the route or sequence of the work, (b) Instructional Card Clerk, who prepares the instructional cards and paste them on work place or on machines, (c) Time and Cost clerk, who determines the time in which work should be completed and cost which should be incurred on work. The fourth planning officer was decided Discipline Officer who maintains discipline in the factory. In the same way four production officers they had appointed, (a) Gang Boss, (b) Speed Boss, (c) Repair Boss and (d) Inspector to check the quality of the work. They also decided standard for the raw material, machines, tools and techniques etc. Tuka Ram suggested, work should be simplified, the unnecessary sizes, shapes, weights should be removed. Mansukh Pandey also had given the suggestion to decide best way to complete a work by doing method study. They applied these four techniques first. After applying these, the profit increased by 20%. It was the big raise in the profit. Sudhan Baboo appreciated the team and this year he announced a 5% increase in the salary and wages. With this increase Ramcharan and his team was so excited to do something more in the next year. Ramcharan decided to implement the remaining five techniques of F.W. Taylor. He called a meeting of all factory officers and his team members who were working on different posts. In this meeting the chairman of the factory Sudhan Baboo was also present. Sudhan Baboo praised Ramcharan, Tuka Ram and team for their hard work and devotion to organization. Ramcharan explained next technique ‘Time Study’, in which average time to complete a work would be decided. He told about motion study in which all the unnecessary movements of human body and machine should be removed, so that time and energy of men and machine could be saved. He explained to Sudhan Baboo that employees and workers could not work continue with the same energy and freshness. So, there is a requirement of ‘Fatigue Study’ to decide the duration and frequency of rest intervals. Sudhan Baboo approved these all the studies to implement in the organization. Two more techniques he explained, one is differential wage system, according to which different wage rate should be decided for those who are achieving targets and for those who are not achieving targets. In the last he elaborated the most important technique ‘Mental Revolution’. He told there should be a change in mind set up of both management and workers. If they would change their mind set up, then there would be no strike and lockdown in the organization. Sudhan Baboo was so much impressed with these all the techniques and immediately passed an order for implementation of these all techniques in the organization. Few years later, the factory of Sudhan Baboo was registered as a Public Company and started business at international level as a multinational company. Now Ramcharan was the Production Manager, Tuka Ram was Sales Manager, Mansukh Pandey was Marketing Manager in that company. Both the foremen Hanshika and Anurag Verma were also promoted to the post of superintendent. The extension of Sudhan Baboo’s business from factory to a multinational company was possible only due to full dedication of Ramcharan’s team and due to implementation of four principles and nine techniques of F.W. Taylor, the father of ‘Scientific Management’. Today the parents of Ramcharan are happy. The dream to make their son a good officer was fulfilled.
