Submitted to Contest #4 in response to the prompt: 'Past follows you when you move to a new city for a fresh start'

I was a cool guy with a decent family, a good wife and two nice kids. My better half worked in a MNC with a reasonably fat salary. She loved her job so much that she would hardly take any CL unless it is for an emergency.

Geetha had a great name too in her office. She was intelligent, knowledgeable and hard working; Knew in and out about subject. Would mix well with all in her office and help them during crisis.

Her only drawback was that she is a bit egoistic. She would never want any one to her prestige or insult her. This was the case both in our home and her office.

You see, one day a colleague of her came to her chamber and asked for a reckoner book. Geethe always needed that book for her job. Nevertheless her kind hearted nature permitted her to part with the same. She gave it to him, but told that she would need it in another two hours. The colleague agreed to return the book soon and left.

Meanwhile, Geetha's boss called her and asked her to complete an assignment in an hour and submit. It was now delicate for Geetha as she already gave the reckoner to her colleague. But she had no choice and sent her attender to fetch the book. But the colleague made the attender wait for more than an hour and then only gave the reckoner.

Geetha couldn't complete her job on time and the boss was furious. He scolded her left and right for her inefficiency. Geetha explained to him what transpired. But the boss simply insulted her in front of her colleagues. The next moment Geetha resigned from the job. That was her nature or rather inability to digest insults hurled at her.

One day evening I was playing with my kids in our home. It was a pleasant evening with a cool breeze. Some one knocked at the door. I opened the doors only to see a tall good looking guy asking for Geetha. I wondered why at all he wanted to see her. Geetha was glad to see him and told me the guy was her ex-colleague. They talked for an hour in the office room and then the guy left.

This happened three four times. I started feeling insecure and also suspicious at the same time. I felt cheated and was sure that something was brewing between them.

One day after he left, we had heated arguments about his frequent visits to our home, holding discussions in her room. In the heat of arguments, I shouted at her and asked her to get out of my house.

Geetha was devastated and her ego was hurt badly. The quarrels took place several times and one day I was fed up. I wanted a divorce and wished to move out. I left the home asking her to stay with the kids and got transferred to another city.

The divorce procedure took more than two years and finally she was free from me. I badly wanted to forget her. She also joined a company to sustain herself and our two kids.

It was all fine now, and it was already ten years, me out of their life and vice versa. I was feeling better in the new place and new life, although single. I never made friends with my colleagues, especially females in my office. I always kept myself away from them, out of fear of being cheated again. It was a peaceful life now, till one day.

One day, I saw a woman walking into the building next to ours. She looked like Geetha from a distance. But I didn't bother much, as I didn't want her in my life again. I was sure that she must have married that office guy who used to meet her often in my house.

One day it so happened that one of my colleagues came to me and narrated an incident that took place in a neighbouring building. A boy slipped on the steps and got both legs fractured. It was heart wrenching situation of a single woman with two kids and he surely wanted to see them and also help them. He urged me too, to come along in the name of humanity.

I succombed to his demand and went to the building. To my wonder, I saw Geetha getting into the ambulance with the wounded boy and another kid. I never wanted to see her again. But alas, the fate got her before me again. All of the past went forward in front of my eyes; that agony, the fights, heated arguments, everything. I saw all of that again.

I wanted to leave the place, but couldn't. Like a robot I moved to her, took our wounded son and went to hospital with Geetha and other kid. He forgot all the past, looking at the two kids. Geetha cried seeing her husband and said she never had any affair with the office guy. But her ego was hurt. Such a big punishment for hurting her ego. She said she raised the boys single handedly and was never interested in any person than him. She came to this city in search of a better job.

I also told her that I was single still and asked her if she wanted to marry me again. Geetha with all her smile agreed for the same. Kids too were all the smile. It was cool day for me from the past. I saw my life unfolding again from the past.
