Submitted to Contest #5 in response to the prompt: 'A simple “yes” leads to something you never saw coming'

Lena Michaels was a woman who thrived on order. Her life was a meticulously arranged spreadsheet -- color-coded, calculated, and entirely predictable. Every morning, she woke up at 6:15 a.m., drank exactly one cup of black coffee, and reviewed her to-do list before leaving her apartment at precisely 7:30. Spontaneity was not in her vocabulary.

So when her best friend, Marco Silva, burst into her office with an excited grin and said, "Want to try that new escape room tonight? The one downtown with the haunted mansion theme?" her immediate reaction was to decline.

"I have my budget report due tomorrow," she said automatically, already turning back to her computer.

Marco rolled his eyes. "Lena, you’ve been staring at spreadsheets for eight hours. Your brain needs a break. Come on—just say yes."

Lena hesitated. She did feel drained. And she had been meaning to try something new.

"Sure, why not?" she said, surprising even herself.

That simple "yes" set off a chain reaction she never saw coming.

THE ESCAPE ROOM

The escape room was called "The Cursed Manor," and it was every bit as elaborate as Marco had promised. Dim red lighting flickered like dying embers as they stepped inside the first chamber—a Victorian-style study with dusty books, cryptic paintings, and an antique desk covered in strange symbols.

"Alright, detective mode activated," Marco said, rubbing his hands together.

Lena, despite her initial reluctance, found herself engrossed. She loved puzzles, and this was just a more theatrical version of problem-solving. She deciphered a cipher hidden in a book, while Marco figured out how to unlock a hidden panel in the desk.

"You’re weirdly good at this," Marco remarked as she solved another clue.

"I am an accountant," she deadpanned. "Numbers and patterns are my thing."

They made it through three rooms before hitting a snag -- a puzzle involving a wall of portraits that needed to be rearranged in a specific order. They were stuck for nearly ten minutes before a voice crackled over the intercom.

"Need a hint?"

Lena jumped. The voice was warm, amused.

"Uh, yes, please," Marco called out.

A few seconds later, the door at the side of the room opened, and a woman stepped in. She had dark curly hair pulled into a messy bun, sharp brown eyes, and a smirk that suggested she already knew they were struggling.

"You’re supposed to organize them by birth year, not death year," she said, pointing at the portraits.

"Ohhh," Lena said, feeling foolish.

"I’m Priya, by the way," the woman said, extending a hand. "I own this place."

Lena shook it, noticing the callouses on her fingers -- artist’s hands, she thought.

"Lena," she replied.

"Marco," Marco added, grinning. "And we *definitely* would’ve figured it out eventually."

Priya laughed. "Sure you would’ve."

She stuck around, offering occasional hints (much to Marco’s mock indignation), and by the time they escaped -- with only three minutes to spare -- Lena found herself oddly disappointed it was over.

COFFEE AND CONSEQUENCES

"You guys were great," Priya said as they stepped back into the lobby. "Most people don’t make it past the second room without a meltdown."

"We’re clearly geniuses," Marco said, throwing an arm around Lena.

Priya chuckled. "You want to grab coffee? There’s a 24-hour place next door. I was about to close up."

Lena hesitated again. It was already past ten, and she had work tomorrow. But something about Priya’s easy confidence made her nod.

"Yeah, okay."

The coffee shop was nearly empty, just the hum of the espresso machine and the low murmur of late-night conversations. They talked for hours -- about escape room design (Priya’s passion), Marco’s disastrous attempt at starting a food truck, and Lena’s love-hate relationship with corporate finance.

At one point, Priya leaned forward. "You know, you’d be scary good at designing puzzles. You’ve got that analytical brain."

Lena laughed. "What, and give up my thrilling life of spreadsheets?"

"I’m serious," Priya said. "People like you -- detail-oriented, logical -- you see solutions most people miss."

Lena didn’t know what to say to that.

A YEAR LATER

That one *yes" changed everything.

Lena started visiting the escape room regularly—sometimes with Marco, sometimes alone. She and Priya became friends, then more than friends. And when Priya mentioned she wanted to expand -- turn the escape room into a full-fledged adventure hub with multiple themed experiences -- Lena surprised herself again.

"I could help," she said. *"With the business side, I mean."

Priya raised an eyebrow. "You’d give up accounting?"

"Not give up. Just… shift focus."

Six months later, Lena quit her job. A year after that, "Cursed Manor Entertainment" had three locations, a loyal customer base, and a reputation for the most brilliantly designed puzzles in the city.

Marco, of course, took full credit. "I knew dragging you out that night would pay off."

Lena rolled her eyes but didn’t argue. Because he was right.

All because of one unplanned "yes."
