Submitted to Contest #1 in response to the prompt: 'Write a story about an underdog chasing an impossible dream. '

Jared Dawson had always been the kid no one noticed. In his small town of Riverbend, he was just another face in the crowd—average grades, no special talents, and a dream that seemed far beyond his reach.

But Jared had a fire in his heart, a dream so big that even the people who loved him the most found it impossible to believe in. He wanted to be an astronaut.

It wasn’t just a passing thought. From the moment he watched a documentary about the Apollo missions at eight years old, space had captured his soul. But for a kid who had never left his hometown, had no money for fancy schools, and struggled with math, becoming an astronaut seemed as likely as touching the moon itself.

Chapter 1: The Dreamer’s Struggle

Jared’s father, a mechanic, always told him, “Dreams are for people who can afford them, son. You gotta be realistic.” His mother, kind but practical, would simply sigh and say, “Why not try for something closer to home?”

His classmates weren’t much better. When he once mentioned his dream during a career day, the entire class burst into laughter.

"Jared? In space? He can’t even pass algebra!"

The words stung, but he refused to let them break him. He devoured every book on space travel, physics, and astronomy that he could find in the local library. When his school introduced an advanced science class, he signed up, even though he barely met the requirements.

At first, it was brutal. Equations swam before his eyes, and he felt completely lost. But he didn’t give up. He stayed after school for tutoring, worked late into the night, and asked endless questions.

Chapter 2: A Flicker of Hope

One day, while browsing an old bookstore, Jared found a biography of Dr. Alan Wilkes, a scientist-turned-astronaut who came from a background similar to his. The book mentioned that Wilkes had struggled with math but overcame it through sheer determination.

Jared found an old email address for Dr. Wilkes and, on a whim, wrote to him, pouring out his struggles and asking for advice. He never expected a reply.

But two weeks later, an email arrived.

"Jared, I was once where you are. The key isn’t being the best—it’s refusing to quit. Keep pushing. The stars belong to those who reach for them."

That single message became Jared’s fuel.

Chapter 3: Breaking Barriers

By his senior year, Jared’s grades had improved, and he had won a state science fair with a project on propulsion systems. Still, when he told his guidance counselor he wanted to apply to NASA’s astronaut program one day, she gave him a sympathetic smile.

"Jared, it's wonderful to dream, but the odds are... slim. Maybe aim for something more achievable?"

Achievable. The word haunted him.

Instead of backing down, Jared applied to the best aerospace engineering schools. Most rejected him. But one—Horizon University—offered him a conditional acceptance. If he could maintain a 3.5 GPA in his first year, he could stay.

It was his chance.

Chapter 4: The Impossible Climb

College was overwhelming. His classmates were top students from elite schools. Jared felt like an imposter.

The first semester was brutal. He failed his first physics test and considered dropping out. But then he remembered Dr. Wilkes’ words.

Jared sought help from professors, joined study groups, and spent nights solving problems on his dorm room wall. Slowly, he improved. By the end of the year, he had a 3.6 GPA.

He stayed.

Over the next four years, Jared became known for his relentless determination. He took internships at space research labs, worked part-time to support himself, and even got the chance to assist in a satellite project.

But becoming an astronaut wasn’t just about education. NASA required physical fitness, leadership skills, and resilience.

So Jared pushed himself beyond academics. He trained his body, joined the university’s survival club, and learned scuba diving, a skill crucial for astronaut training.

Chapter 5: The Final Test

After years of hard work, Jared applied to NASA’s highly competitive astronaut training program. Thousands applied. Only a handful were chosen.

The interview process was intense—mental and physical tests, problem-solving under pressure, and teamwork challenges. Jared had never been more nervous.

Days turned into weeks as he waited. Then, one morning, an email arrived.

"Congratulations, Jared Dawson. You have been selected for astronaut training."

He stared at the screen, unable to breathe. He had done it.

Chapter 6: Touching the Stars

Training was the hardest thing he had ever endured. Simulated emergencies, extreme physical tests, isolation training—it pushed him to his limits.

But Jared refused to give up. The boy who once struggled with math now calculated orbital mechanics. The kid laughed at in school now trained alongside the best in the world.

Then came the moment he had dreamed of his entire life.

Jared was assigned to a space mission. As he sat in the shuttle, waiting for liftoff, he thought about every moment that had led him here. The doubts, the failures, the struggles.

Then, as the engines roared and the shuttle ascended, Jared Dawson—the underdog from Riverbend—finally touched the stars.

The End.
