The aroma of roasted coffee beans hung heavy in the air with a familiar comfort. Suraj stared out the cafe window, watching the city bustle. Then, he saw her. Bela.
It had been years since their school farewell, years since he'd last seen her radiant smile. Bela, his best friend, the girl who shared his dreams of opening a quirky little shop filled with handcrafted artifacts, was standing hesitantly by the counter, her eyes searching.
"Bela?" he breathed, his voice a whisper.
Her eyes widened, a flash of recognition, then joy, illuminating her face. "Suraj! Oh my god, it's really you!"
They fell into easy conversation over a cup of coffee. They talked about their shared passion for art, the sketches they'd filled their notebooks with. The dream of their shop, "Echoes of Time," resurfaced, vibrant and alive. They made plans to launch a shop specializing in artifacts.
But life, as it often does, had other plans. Bela's parents, swayed by the allure of a wealthy NRI groom, announced her engagement. Bela, caught between familial duty and her own desires, felt her dreams crumble.
"I can't, Suraj," she whispered, tears blurring her vision. "I can't do this to my parents. They think it's for the best."
Suraj's heart ached. He understood, yet a part of him felt betrayed, not by Bela, but by the cruel twist of fate. "I understand," he said, his voice tight, "but our shop… our dream…"
"I know," she said, her voice barely audible. "I'm so sorry."
The wedding was a grand affair. Suraj, standing amongst the crowd, felt like an outsider. He watched Bela, a beautiful but distant figure, her smile strained. Her eyes were filled with a sadness he knew too well.
After the ceremony, he approached her with a heavy heart. "Bela," he said, in a low murmur, "I wish you happiness."
She looked at him, her eyes filled with unshed tears. "Thank you, Suraj," she whispered. "Thank you for everything."
He took a deep breath, knowing this was goodbye, perhaps forever. "Goodbye, Bela," he said. His voice was thick with emotion. He turned and walked away. The image of her sad eyes etched into his memory. He thought of all the artefacts they could have sold, all the stories they could have told. With a cold, undeniable sense, he understood that their dream of "Echoes of Time" was nothing more than a lost memory. And Bela flew to America with her NRI husband.
In the heart of America, Bela found herself trapped in a web of domestic violence. Bela's world had shrunk to the size of her husband's rage. Her husband, a man she was married to a month ago, had turned into a monster, controlling her every move and inflicting both sexual and emotional pain upon her. Each whispered insult, each controlling demand, chipped away at her sense of self. The honeymoon phase, a mere memory, was replaced by a chilling reality of manipulation and fear. She endured his gaslighting for six months. Those six months felt like an eternity, a slow, agonizing descent into a nightmare. The gaslighting, a constant barrage of distorted realities, left her questioning her own sanity.
One night, huddled in the corner of their bedroom, bruised and trembling, Bela found a flicker of defiance. She remembered the vibrant, independent woman she used to be. That woman was still there, buried beneath layers of fear and doubt. With a trembling hand, she reached for her phone and called her brother, Vedant.
Vedant's voice, strong and reassuring, was like a balm to her wounded spirit. He listened without judgment. His anger was a silent promise of protection. Within days, a plan was hatched by Vedant and his wife Priya. Under the guise of a weekend visit to her brother, Bela packed a small bag, her heart pounding with a mixture of terror and hope. Before she left, her husband attempted to manipulate her, claiming he had a feeling she wouldn't return. Bela remained expressionless, offering no response. He then drove her to the airport.
The women's shelter was a sanctuary, a haven of shared experiences and unwavering support. The counsellors, with their gentle wisdom and unwavering belief in her strength, helped Bela navigate the complex emotions swirling within her. They provided legal aid, guided her through the divorce process, and helped her understand the patterns of abuse she had endured.
The courtroom was a battleground, a place where Bela had to confront her abuser and relive her trauma. Her voice, though trembling, resonated with unwavering truth. She recounted the details of her abuse, the nights filled with terror, the days spent walking on eggshells. The judge, witnessing her courage and the evidence presented, granted her the restraining order, a shield against her former husband's power.
The divorce was a hard-won victory, a symbol of her liberation. But Bela knew that legal freedom was only the first step. She had to rebuild her life, brick by brick. The business course at the community college was her lifeline, a chance to learn, to grow, to create a future for herself. She immersed herself in her studies, fuelled by a burning desire to prove her resilience. Upon graduation, she launched her own small shop of artefacts, a testament to her resilience, entrepreneurial spirit and an old dream.
Her shop, was born from her own experiences. Each piece, intricately curated, represented a chapter in her journey, a symbol of strength, resilience, and hope. As her business flourished, so did her confidence. The shadows of her past began to recede, replaced by a newfound sense of self-worth. She began to radiate a newfound strength, attracting the attention of her best friend, Suraj. Suraj, being a kind and supportive man, had always admired Bela's spirit. He was drawn to her resilience, her unwavering determination to overcome adversity. He saw not a victim, but a survivor, a dear friend who had emerged from the ashes stronger and more radiant than ever.
Their friendship blossomed into a deep and abiding love, built on mutual respect, understanding, and admiration. Suraj cherished her vulnerabilities, her scars, and her unwavering determination. They shared a deep connection, a bond forged in their shared past and their dreams for the future.
One sunny afternoon, amidst the blooming flowers of spring, Suraj proposed to Bela. It was a moment of pure, unadulterated joy. Tears streamed down Bela's face, a mixture of happiness and relief. She had found love, not in spite of her past, but because of the past.
Their wedding was a celebration of resilience, a testament to the power of the human spirit. Surrounded by loved ones, Bela radiated a newfound confidence, a beacon of hope for other survivors. She had transformed her pain into a powerful force for good, a symbol of strength and inspiration.
Their life together was a tapestry woven with love, laughter, and shared dreams. They built a home filled with warmth and understanding, a sanctuary where they could heal and grow. Bela’s past was not erased, but it no longer defined her. Bela's journey of resilience had led her to a love story with Suraj that was truly a fairy tale come true. And, of course, they lived happily ever after.

Beautiful story. It reflects the emotions and constraints of women who go through domestic violence. Best part is that Bela got a happy ending with the love of her life. Wish every woman stands up against the violence they go through.
