JUNE 10th - JULY 10th
"This is a case of Murder," Raghav said while inspecting the dead body hanging from the ceiling fan.
"Are you sure?" Punit quipped.
“He left no note. Every person who commits suicide leaves a note."
"Maybe he was too distraught to write a note."
"I agree, but why was he depressed? We have to find the why. Once we have the reason, we will find the culprit."
Raghav was a police detective assessing the situation, and Punit was a police constable assisting Raghav. Their present case was regarding the suicide of Rahul, an executive from a reputed firm.
"We should interview the family members," Punit advised
“We will. Their stories will solve the riddle. Let us interview them one by one. First the wife, then the brother and then his neighbour." Said Raghav in agreement.

"Mrs Rahul, Tell us everything you know about Rahul," Raghav asked
Sarita Rahul wiped her tears and said:
"Rahul was a good man. He was compassionate and would never hurt anybody. We got married two years back. Ours was an arranged marriage. Oh! I don't believe that he is dead. I loved him dearly.
He was a quiet man. His father and mother died in a car accident. He was also in the car at the time of the accident but he somehow survived. He always felt guilty for that. He believed that he should have died along with them. It was before our marriage. He always had bouts of depression where he used to blame himself for the incident. I tried to help him, and he was recovering too. I don't know what happened now." Sarita paused.
“Was he on any medication?" Raghav asked
"No"
“Was he alone in the house at the time of suicide?"
"Yes"
"Where were you?"
"I was at my Parent's home for one week."
"Why did you leave him alone when you knew his mental state?"
“I regret it now. Rahul was normal when I left the house."
"How was his relationship with his brother?"
"Cordial. Rahul always talked to Shaurya bhaia with affection."
"What about his work?"
"Rahul was under a lot of stress due to work. His boss was very arrogant and inhuman. I believe he led to Rahul's suicide. If I see him, I will kill him."
"So you believe that Rahul committed suicide due to work pressure."
"Yes."
Raghav gave a thoughtful glance to Sarita and then asked her to leave.
***
"Mr Shaurya, how was your relationship with Rahul?"
"Very Nice. After the death of Dad and Mom, I was his guardian."
"Did you know that Rahul felt responsible for the death of his parents?"
"Yes, He was a bit depressed. I talked to him many times on this issue and consoled him. He was beginning to move on from that accident."
"Was Rahul under any kind of Medication?"
"No."
"How was his relationship with Sarita?"
"Normal, Just like any husband and wife."
“Did he complain about his work?"
"Yes, a lot. His present boss was a hard taskmaster and insensitive. Work pressure was high on Rahul."
"Do you think work pressure led to Rahul's suicide?"
"Maybe. But Rahul was under stress due to work."
"Thank you, Shaurya," Raghav concluded.
***
"Vivek, you worked with Rahul?"
"Yes."
"Are you his neighbor?"
"Yes."
“Tell me about the work pressure at the job."
"Our new boss is very strict. Also the quantum of work has increased. That has led to lot of stress at work."
"Was your boss's behavior same for all? Whether he was extra cruel on Rahul?"
"No. The Boss is strict on all."
"Did you ever think of committing suicide?"
"No. Nobody commits suicide because of work pressure."
"Did Rahul ever mention any family problem?"
"Yes. Rahul felt responsible for his parent's death. Many times he was depressed."
"Did he ever complain about his wife or brother?"
"Sometimes. Rahul used to say that they don't understand him."
"How will you describe Rahul?"
"He was very creative individual. He was dedicated to his work. He was a quiet individual who used to think a lot. I can't believe that he is no more. We were good friends."
"Did Rahul ever talked about any medication?"
"No."
"That is all I need to know Vivek. Thank you."
***
"Sir, I think Rahul committed suicide due to pressure from his Boss. We should interrogate his boss too." Punit said
"No. There is no need for it. I know who killed Rahul." Raghav replied
"What? Who has committed this heinous crime?" Punit exclaimed unable to suppress his excitement.
Raghav took a deep breath and said:
"Did you notice that everyone knew that Rahul was depressed?"
"Yes."
"Yet, Rahul was not under any medication. When we searched the house, we found no medicine either. Also there is no proof of anyone else in the house."
"Yes."
"So there is no rocket science in knowing who killed Rahul. We killed him. Our society and its taboos killed him. Everyone knew his sad mental state but no one bothered to take him to a psychiatrist. His family members thought they could talk him out of his sadness. Such is their foolishness. In the bout of depression Rahul killed himself. A precious life is lost.
Punit, Brain is like any other organ. Brain needs treatment just as any other organ does. But, we think that having a mental problem is a stigma. This thought needs to be obliterated from our society.
We as a society killed Rahul in a cold blood. But his sacrifice need not go waste. Awaken, and we will save other Rahuls."
