Ajay is an aspiring film director in secunderabad. To impress a film producer, he starts making a short film and finds Julia, a psychology graduate to be the lead. After some resistance, Julia agrees to act in the film, and the shoot is completed within a few days. One day while shooting, some goons sexually harass Julia leading to Ajay fighting them. In that ongoing fight, a guy hits him on his head, which leads him to ear bleeding and starts suffering from a psychological disorder that temporarily manifest him into a different personality.

The producer, impressed with the short film , green-lights Ajay's feature film. A year later, Ajay releases his film, Rupa, which turns out to be successful. Ajay is offered to remake the film in Hindi but during a press conference for the remake in Mumbai, Ajay is arrested on charges of copyright infringement. A notable publishing house based in Kolkata, SPS Publications, alleges that Ajay copied their best-selling novel Sati written by Satya Prakash Sinha fourty nine years ago.

In court, strong evidence is presented against Ajay, and Julia's cousin Leelavathi takes up the case. Ajay pleads not guilty, and after a successful polygraph test, the court releases him on unconditional bail and gives them 3 days to present their case. Upon Julia's suggestion, Ajay undergoes clinical hypnosis with the help of Julia's psychology professor, during which he reveals that he was Satya Prakash Sinha in a past life and Lucy was his wife.

In West Bengal in 1970, Satya Prakash Sinha is an influential social reformer and revolutionary writer with communist ideologies , who comes from a conservative family. As his family disapproves of his methods, he decides to leave but stumbles upon Mahira, a young girl from Madhya Pradesh is married to an old man. When Satya Prakash was about to sail in the boat he looks at Mahira who was comming opposite to him. Satya then decide to stop his journey for winning her. When Mahira along with her husband comes to this village their relatives welcome them. Mahira then take every one's blessings as it's tradition. Then his husband asks her to carry all the luggage to their house. As she was small she refuses, then her husband slaps her and scold her. she then carry all the luggage but she dropps few of them and she falls down with those luggage. They all moves forward with out looking at her. Then she looks around for help and see Satya who was behind her. Then Satya come near to her and help her by carrying the luggage

On the way they both have a small conversation. Then he leaves her at her residence and turns back to leave but she calls him and ask his name then she looks at him till he moves far away. Satya then returns back home and he every day roam around Mahira's home. Mahira secretly look at him and slowly she starts developing love on him. Meanwhile her husband who gets his leg fractured on before their first night treat her as the sign for bad luck. Her aunt and those all relatives would make her work like a house maid, even for a huge task and for a silly reasons. Mahira feels very tired by working the whole day. One day she fells down on the floor while making roti. Then her aunt sprinkles some water on her and orders her to fetch a pot of water. She requests her that she was ill and she has no energy to walk till the well, but her aunt scolds and orders her to fetch water. Mahira then walks out with a pot towards the well. Then Satya looks at her and comes near her. When he touches her hands he feels warm and he then touches her forehead and notices that she was ill. He then stops her and takes her forcefully to the clinic and feeds her with fruits. She cries inside herself and he takes her out of the village to make her happy. After becoming happy Satya leaves her at her home and ask her to come out at night and he will be waiting for her near her house. Mahira thinks about Satya and Waits for the night. When it's night then she bravely decide to go out and secretly comes out and her face glows like a light on seeing Satya. Then both of them travel in a boat and enjoy the moon light. Satya then teaches her telugu and every night they would enjoy like this. One night Satya takes her out of the village to a beautiful rose garden there Mahira enjoy a lot and cry for a while about her married life. Then Satya say that only a brave step against this evils can change the society. He then change her name as Lucy and motivates her to be brave and fight against the evils. One day when Satya recieves a call letter praising his literature he go there and gets honoured for his great work. When he returns back home he shocks to see Mahira as widow. He then comes to know what had happened and feels a lot. After the death of her husband the whole village along with her family look her like a woeful girl, by whom they are facing the problems. Every one in the village treat her like a sign of bad luck and her aunt and relatives scold her every time. By all these she gets emotionally dejected. The family head then takes her husband's dead body and arrange for the funeral and he says that according to their tradition Mahira should also be burnt according to the sati system. Then everyone makes Mahira ready by saying about sati system. She then cries a lot. Satya enquires about this when he ask few Neighbours and an enraged satya drive fast with his bike and hits the gates and fights with everyone and kills the village head along with those who support sati system by throwing them in the burning funeral. He then warns that if any one opposes him then they too will be killed like this.

He then takes Lucy (Mahira) and moves to Calcutta where he starts working in a printing press. By 1978, Satya becomes an accomplished yet controversial writer of his time. On Lucy's suggestion, Satya opens up a trust to rehabilitate widowed Satis.

Satya's brother, Vishal, requests him to visit their village to see their ailing elder brother. However, upon their arrival, his two elder brothers send Vishal to bring tender coconuts , which turns out to be a ploy to murder Satya for bringing disrepute to their family by killing village heads and marrying Mahira (Lucy), who is a window. Vishal arrives but is unable to save Satya, who dies in front of him. The two elder brothers are killed in an accident a few years later and satya's nephews now run SPS Publications, Satya Prakash Sinha's publishing house.

In the present, Ajay visits the printing press in Kolkata where Satya worked. However, he is told that Satya and Lucy died decades ago, Lucy having left to find Satya. Leelavathi submits Ajay's hypnosis report as evidence in the court that Satya Prakash Sinha is reincarnated as Ajay. However, the prosecution lawyer objects, stating there is no scientific evidence of reincarnation. While the court is about to give its judgment, an 93-year-old Vishal visits the court and declares Ajay to be Satya's reincarnation. Upon being asked for proof, Vishal explains that Ajay adapted Satya's short story Varna as his short film Varnam, but that story was never published in the public domain. Vishal submits Satya's hand-written manuscript of the story as proof and withdraws the case as the chairman of SPS Publications. Ajay is acquitted of all charges.

Vishal reveals to Ajay that Lucy is alive and waiting for him. Ajay then visits an aged Lucy, who now runs a dance school named after Satya. Upon meeting Ajay, both have an emotional reunion and as per her wish, Licy dies peacefully in his arms.
