The Night Sky

The Night Sky A Short Story by Swati Roy

May 16th 2009 a very hot summer night in New Mexico. Cat a 16 year old girl was on her rooftop watching the night sky like every night. She loved the glistening and beautiful night sky and she felt the stars were talking to her in a calm voice that only she could hear. She believed that stars were her home and she was abandoned by the people who lived in the stars. She believed she was a star child made with star dust.
After spending some time watching the night sky she decided to go back downstairs to finish her study, she was about to leave then her elder brother Chris appeared with a cup of coffee and said “what a beautiful night sky”? “Yes” she replied. Cat was very brainy student she didn’t need to study much but she was very shy and modest but very beautiful. She was made fun of by her friends a lot due to her being different, ignored and underestimated what to do life sucked?!
On a very beautiful hot night the sky was clear and beautiful glistening stars were dancing in the sky with the moon . Cat was walking calmly she didn’t know her life was gonna change that night, after some time watching the stars she said “ enough walking let’s go back and do the boring stuff”. She was about to leave then she discovered a glistening star like object coming right at her it was too close and wasn’t a star. She was trying to identify the object but she couldn’t because the weather started to become foggy and misty but very hot. She came downstairs quickly and told her parents about what she just saw , her elder brother was kind of a science buff wanted to see what was happening so he went with her to the rooftop and said “let’s see what big aliens are trying to get you”!
In the jungle they saw smoke coming out, after walking 20 minutes they discovered a glistening space object oozing smoke and blue ray lighting up the whole jungle. It wasn’t a space craft. It was a space rock so beautiful and mysterious like Cat herself. “Did you bring your phone”? her brother asked Cat “no I didn’t” she replied . “Wait here I will go and tell people” said her brother , “you’re leaving me alone” Cat said . “I will be back soon don’t worry” said her brother. Cat knew she had to stay because the meteorite was calling out to her.
5 minutes past no one came back, well here comes the trouble the meteorite was starting to shake leaving Cat in awe the blue light was even more intense without any fear she touched the body of the meteorite absorbing all the blue light. She woke up the next morning on her bed like it was a dream “who brought me here”? she asked her parents , “your brother did” her mother replied, “what happened to the meteorite” Cat
asked her mother ,
“honey there was no meteorite” her mother replied . “What?! But I saw it so was Chris!”, “yes you did but by the time we found you there was no meteorite and you were unconscious”.
Well the meteorite gave its energy to Cat therefore it no longer exist shrinking itself to a normal rock it broke and bonded with soil. The meteorite energy perfectly bonded with her DNA without physically changing her and for a normal person it would be impossible without causing them vaporization from the inside out. Her being different saved a lot of people.
But she didn’t understand what just happened but she kept searching for a possible explanation.
June 4th 2009 Cat started feeling different she felt like her senses were stronger than ever before and she could control her and other people’s emotions using the energy of blue light.
Years past researching and gathering information of what happened to the that night . She didn’t tell anyone about what happened and the magnificent power she possessed. Except her mother she knew a little bit but shush!
After some time she started writing articles about weird things and making people believe that stuff like this exists in the universe and she became a space researcher famous for her work . A girl like her always being made fun of, underestimated and ignored being famous just because of a space rock was quite magnificent. But what happened to her that night and how she was able to absorb all the meteorite energy and why it chose her still remains a mystery?

If you know there is something different about you don’t hide it because being different is amazing. People who are different, who nobody gets and are very mysterious like Cat know that there is something special about you so embrace it. Not just the meteorite she herself was a mystery and always will be.
