The Decision

Opening the black-coloured greasy door which had colourful signs of music on it, Sameer had a lump in his throat. However, he handled himself: feeling the door to be very simple but filthy, he didn’t pay attention to it and before he could move, he froze...Halting for a second, instead of scrutinizing the door which had some unique sign not related to music at all and the olive green moss on it, he revisited the day when his mother advised him some valuable words which always prickled him and raised the hair on his arms whenever he remembered,

“Sameer, if you want to do something in life, you need to sacrifice something for it. If you won’t sacrifice being with us and your friends all the time, you will not be able to be anything. You won’t be able to live your dream and make it come true if you don’t come back to reality. I order you to leave home and only come back when you make your dream come true!”

He made up his mind and finally entered the room. To his surprise, it was flooded with thousands of people and looked like an ocean overflowing over his head. He felt like a scaredy cat frightened of so many people around. It raised the hair on his arms. Gathering some courage, he started strolling towards the head teacher.

“Um…Hello Ma’am. Excuse me. I want some help! Ma’am…Hello?” He stuttered as he spoke trying to get the teacher’s attention from the huge flood of bees buzzing around the head teacher.

Finally, the teacher heard his honey sweet voice.

She asked rudely, pointing towards the door, “What do you want? Need any help fellow? Don’t think that I’m going to help you any. I’m too busy now and I don’t think you are any student from this school so I don’t have time to solve your silly problems. Just get lost, okay!”

Feeling extremely ashamed of the teacher yelling at him and the other students chuckling and chortling at him : he stood aside - way far away from them, biting his lips. It was very peculiar of why the teacher approached the other students and laughed with them after scolding and screeching at Sameer brutally. Although he was in a vulnerable position for the first time in his life, he reacted quite bravely towards it, and started grinning anxiously as if nothing had ever happened. His state of mind got cooler and he felt like a free bird flying in the air. Standing there bored yet energetic, he realised that everyone started slamming the door hard – Bang! which even the teacher did: as they left the room without even noticing him a bit, behaving as if they all were the epitome of elegance, pride, blusteriness and show-off.

All alone and isolated he was, leaning towards the pale purple mossy walls, he questioned the ceiling if he was with him: to which, unfortunately the ceiling ignored. All of a sudden, he started sauntering around the enormously gigantic elephant-like area - perceiving all the wall-hangings of famous musicians, instruments, a huge photo of a teacher with a label which said ‘Head Teacher’ and some notes of songs and musical instruments. He was shell-shocked and completely perplexed as the photo didn’t match with the teacher he met. He couldn’t make out who was the real headteacher. After some time, as he was fed up of these thoughts, he approached towards the grubby hazel-nut plastic chair.

In the massive music school, completely vacant and empty, only one of them left inside - a depressed Sameer sat on the edge of the chair and wondered, gazing at his favourite sapphire laced shoes he wore at that point of time. Figuring out who was the real headteacher, pondering why did the woman behave in a manner like this with him, his eyes got watery and cloudy, and the memory back at home shivered down the lane. So beautiful and chirpy were those days with his parents but more than that, with his dear friend - Akshay. The two of them relished on food together, studied together, played music together, sang together, went every single place together but sometimes even argued a lot. Of course, now he wasn’t with him and he was completely isolated by heart with no one to care for and no one who would care for him. No friends, no family, no loved ones: he – who was all alone by himself, wiped his tears remembering his mother’s words again. Yet, regretting about his decision of listening to his family and friends and coming here to learn music in one of the most famous music schools in India, Sameer wasn’t able to make himself understand the situation at all. But what could he do? He was all alone in a town where he didn’t know anyone at the boys’ hostel.

Just then…someone at the door caught his sight and he was shattered completely: broken by heart.
