Sarah was a really studious girl and she loathed mathematics. Yes, although she was august in all her subjects, she could never get those maths problems, right. One thing or the other was always the complication . All the teachers tried to edify her mind with maths but she had made up her mind that she didn't want to learn it and when you make up your mind that you don't want to do or learn something, even the almighty can't help you with it.
One night, Sarah was practicing maths and she scratched out a sum. She had an exam the next day but she was not ready.
"Damn it! I just can't get it right!",she shouted to no one in particular.
She was exasperated and she put her head down on the maths book. Soon, she was asleep. She woke up to a buzzing sound. She was not in her room. She looked around and saw that she was in some sort of cage in a well-lit room. A cage with its bars made of numbers!
"Where am I?!",she shouted.
And on cue, a well-dressed man entered the room.
"What is this place?", Sarah shouted
"It is a sum prison", rejoindered the man.
"A what?"
"A sum-prison",he reiterated as if it should make sense to her.
"Who are you? And why am I locked up in here?",asked Sarah
"Oh , where are my manners? I am Mathematics. Cousin of Physics. I am sure you have heard of my cousin. You have heard of him, right? Tall, dark, talks all the time about pendulum and laws",said the man
Sarah stared at him and exclaimed with astonishment,"I know what physics is! But....You are a subject! How can I be talking to you? And wait, did you kidnap me?!"
"No no",said maths. "I didn't kidnap you here! You did this to yourself. Your ennui towards maths and making silly mistakes that you shouldn't, is what got you here!"
There was a loud snoring sound in the background
"What is that?",asked Sarah.
"That is you", answered Maths. "At the moment you are sleeping. And I must say I don't appreciate people drooling on my books. And that's partly the reason I put you in here"
"Oh, so it's a dream! Am I lucid Dreaming?",asked Sarah hopefully
"Yes you are asleep, but this is not a dream!"
"Fine!",cried Sarah. "Tell me what I have to do to get out of here?!"
"That's the thing Sarah! You don't have to do anything",said Maths. "You are in a sum-prison and the only way to get out of here is if someone in the real world solves the sum you are trapped in. Then your lock will open and you will be free to go!"
"What?! I am trapped in a math sum?!",asked Sarah in a hoarse voice, with utter horror and disbelief.
"Oh yes indeed. The sum you are trapped in, is",said Maths taking out a big tablet from his pocket and reading it's content. "Sarah takes 5/8 of the water from the well in 20 days. How many more days will she take to finish the job at her current rate?"
"That's an easy sum! Just give me a paper and pen and I'll solve it",pleaded Sarah
"Oh no. Only any person other than you can solve the sum",said Maths
"But...what if no one is ever able to solve it"
"Then you'll be trapped here for eternity",said Maths and snapped his fingers. "I forgot to tell you .... Until someone solves the sum, you will have to do the job that is assigned in your sum"
"You mean I have to keep getting water out from a well?",asked Sarah and as she turned around, there was a huge well behind her.
"Yes, you will keep getting water out of that well until someone solves your sum",said maths.
"What if I don't do it? What if I don't take out water from this well?!"
"Oh then you will be punished"
And as he said that, a beautiful woman in a red pencil skirt and green shirt with a whip appeared.
"Hello dear",said the woman in a sweet manner. "I am Biology and this is my nephew maths. Now, I know many ways to beat a person where they feel the most pain because I know all about Human anatomy"
"You are Biology!",gasped Sarah. "But I like biology!"
"Liking all subjects and disliking maths doesn't justify the disliking part",said Biology. "Also, chop chop, pull the water up from the well unless you want me to call our grandmother English, she is very strict let me tell you"
"English is your grandmother?!"
Sarah had nothing else to say. She got to work.
Before leaving, maths conjured a tv out of nowhere and told her that she would be able to view the children who were trying to attempt her sum.
At first, Sarah believed anyone could solve her sum. But her belief began to fade as days passed by.
Her arms were tired and she only got break whenever someone tried out her sum.
One day she saw a girl sitting down and observing Sarah's sum.
"Please please, do it right!",Sarah begged silently.
The girl started the sum and surprisingly, she did it right.
"Oh my god!",shouted Sarah. "She did it! I am free!"
Biology smiled and called out to Maths. He took out an algebraic key and opened her cage.
"You are free to go",said Maths. "I think you've learnt your lesson"
"I am free to go? Just like that?",asked Sarah.
"Yeah", answered Biology. "Just like that, unless you would like to be trapped in a biology prison! Those kids can never get the diagram right!"
"No NO!",shouted Sarah. "I would like to leave"
Maths smiled and said,"Then wake up!"
"What?"
A voice from far-off came. "Wake up! Wake up now!"
And Sarah woke up from her dream. Her father had been trying to wake her up.
Sarah looked around and then at her maths book.
"So it was a dream", smiled Sarah
"What?",asked her father
"Nothing",she answered with a smile on her face.
From that day onwards, Sarah never missed a sum presented to her. Partly because she knew she had to be as good in maths as much as she was in other subjects and partly because she thought someone was trapped in those sums and would be there for eternity if she didn't set them free!
