The book stands out for its self-introspective outlook, and honest portrayal of the life of an officer in the Indian administrative service. The book captures with unconscious frankness, the functioning of the government at various levels. It also deals with the real and imagined discrimination faced by those IAS officers who are inducted from the other services, and this perhaps makes the book, the first of its kind.

Devendra Singh Rai
Devendra Singh Rai, the writer, opted out of his career and joined the Madhya Pradesh government as a Deputy Collector in 1975; later he was inducted into the Indian Administrative Service. The writer belongs to the old school of public servants who pegged service before comfort and above all, prized certain principles like humanity, fair play, judiciousness and honesty.
Post-retirement, D.S.Rai keeps himself occupied with writing books on contemporary issues, pursuing music, playing tennis and travelling.
