Bethlehem as an ancient city has been observed in different periods of time/ It is still a focus today of modern development. There is a gross misconception that Bethlehem is a touristic city and as such should be always viewed in this context.
The book has adopted two main levels of research: the historical and the social-economic one.
The purpose of the historic study is to shed light in a way that critical moments and in time, and lessons learned from historic development can be very beneficial to a new way of thinking for future development.
The beginnings of a city such as Bethlehem are an ancient history study. Studying the development of historic power change and examining the wars and history of changing authorities in the region where Bethlehem is, could provide novel ways of reading history, particularly if this is combined with data and information regarding socio-economic, cultural, religious development, military and ethnicity.

Khalil Shokeh, Ph. D.
Khalil Shokeh received his Bachelor of Arts in social science (history was not yet offered) from Bethlehem University, his Master Degree in Academic Administration from Southern Illinois University, and a Diploma in Management from New Castle Upon Tyne University in England. He completed his research work and obtained a PhD in History from Florida International University, USA. He held numerous positions as academic and administrative staff at Bethlehem University before being appointed director general of the first Palestinian Ministry of higher Education and then director general of Bethlehem’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Dr Shokeh is currently also working to archive electronically the material in the archives of the Bethlehem Municipality. He has published several social historical books and articles, most notably History of Bethlehem during the Ottoman Period (1517-1917); in November 2015 his new book A Tour in Battir Village was published.
