Dr. Powesiu Lawes

Dr. Powesiu Lawes started his education journey from his home village of Loniu. Loniu village is on Los negros Island in Manus Province of Papua New Guinea. He completed Year 1 to 3 in his village before going on to a Mission Boarding School at Lugos, about 10 kilometres from his village. Life was indeed a little difficult at Lugos Primary School but our teachers there were all expatriates who made lessons easier to grasp especially the English language.

Dr. Powesiu Lawes developed his artistic skills in this School and went on to Manus Government High School where he became the 'artist in the school' when senior students had left. After leaving Manus High School he went on to Sogeri Senior High School - in Central Province near Port Moresby - and this was where he learned to write. At Sogeri he was awarded first price for Advanced Publication when he published three (3) books for Papua New Guinea's Independence in 1975. Completing Year 12 (previously known as Form 6 in those days), he gained entry into the University of Papua New Guinea to study Medicine, but only after turning down a Flying Scholarship to Australia.

Dr. Powesiu Lawes spent time working for the National Department of Health and the PNG Department of Defence before entering Private Practice. Having had enough of city life, Dr. Powesiu Lawes returned to his home village of Loniu where he continues limited medical practice and artwork and write some books. This book, Loniu Village, is about the village, its people, where they migrated from, their culture and influences that have affected their lives, livelihood, their culture and a brief outlook into their future.
