This is the second in the series of Traveller’s Dictionaries for different regional languages of Bangladesh.  The first one was about the Netrokonian language which was very well received by people both in Bangladesh and researchers overseas.  This one is about the Sylheti language. The Sylhet division, where this language is spoken, is located in the north eastern parts of Bangladesh with Assam (India) on its north, and Tripura (India) on its south and east. There are four districts in this division – Sunamganj and Sylhet on the north, and Habiganj and Moulvibazaar in the South.

Amin Rahman

Amin Rahman was born in Kolkata in 1943.  He was trained and educated as an Electrical Engineer, and ICT and Technology Management specialist.  He has worked and lived for extended periods of time in Pakistan (1966-1968), Scotland (1968-71, 1979-80), Bangladesh (1972-75, 2003-), Iraq (1975-78), Venezuela (1978-79), Australia (1980-84, 1988-1992, 1995-). Since retiring in 2003, he has been working as a Freelance Applied Linguist researching, among other things, on English Pronunciation for Non-Native English Speakers, Bengali Pronunciation for Non-Bengali Speakers, and regional languages of Bangladesh. 

 
Aniruddha Bhattacharya is from Dinajpur.  He completed his Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and Engineering from the Asia Pacific University. He is currently working as a Senior Software Engineer at Sheba Digital Limited.  Aniruddha has presented joint papers with Amin Rahman at international conferences organised by NELTA, BELTA. ELT@I and Daffodil International University.  He also helped in the conversion of the Netrokonian text to IPA in the book “চল নেত্রকোনা ঘুড়ে আসি”. 

Fatema Farid is from Sylhet. In 2010 she completed her MS in Sociology from M.C. College, under the National University. She started her teaching career in 2013. Currently she worked as a teacher at Muhibur Rahman Academy, Sylhet. Fatema loves reading, writing, teaching and travelling.
Muhammad Syedul Islam is from Sunamganj.  He completed his BA (honours) and MA in English from Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, Sylhet, and is currently working as an English Teacher at Jalalabad Cantonment High School. Jalalabad, Sylhet. He writes poetry and lyrics for Siloti folk and country songs to which he gives tune and sings them. He is an enlisted announcer and programme presenter at Bangladesh Betar (radio) Sylhet centre and has published the following books – (a) Sylheter Kobi O Kobita   (b) Ganer Pakhi.
