Do you find it hard to determine whether your motivation is working or not? Intrinsic motivation is very difficult to maintain. You need to work very hard to achieve your goals, and then you have to pay very close attention to how you feel once you have achieved your goal. It takes quite a bit of self-discipline to be able to consistently use intrinsic motivation in order to create a habit of working out.
On the other hand, extrinsic motivation comes very easily to most people. It is usually given to us on a silver platter. If you want something very badly, you will just naturally find ways to get it no matter how much it would personally inconvenience you. This type of motivation works great when you are just starting out, because it provides the push you need to start working out and reaching your goal. However, if you are motivated people already, extrinsic motivation will just end up being a waste of time.
The problem with both types of motivation is that they don't necessarily take into account the importance of self-discipline. When you are in the midst of a workout, your body needs to be kept going at all times to give you optimal results. Your subconscious mind will always be reminding you that you have to keep going until you reach your goal. To effectively use your internal motivators, you need to make sure that you keep going until your goal.
When we talk about the importance of keeping ourselves motivated, we are basically talking about giving ourselves the drive we need to do our best every single day, no matter what. If we are doing an exercise regime for our health, we need to make sure that we are going to eat a healthy diet as well. We should never starve ourselves while working out. Doing so would be counterproductive and actually prevent us from achieving our goal. Intrinsic motivation works great in this aspect, but we can always go further by using extrinsic motivators such as a big boost from our peers or a good reward from a company if we achieve a milestone.
External motivation is really a simple concept that is easy to understand. When you are feeling less motivated to do something, you probably won't feel like getting out there and doing it. You might even be thinking "I don't really want to", or "What good will it do me if I don't go out today?" However, when you get out there and actually start working towards your goal, the excitement and the drive that you once felt begins to wash over you realise that yes you really do want to achieve this goal.
In this respect, intrinsic motivation is better than extrinsic motivation. Intrinsic motivation is something that you become naturally inclined to do. You don't have to look for a reward or think about how much better you can feel if you get out there and actually achieve a certain goal. Your motivation is built on a deep sense of personal interest and personal belief in your own ability to successfully achieve your goal. It's also a great way to stay fit and stay motivated by offering rewards when you do achieve a certain amount of progress.
The key to making your motivation work is consistency. You need to treat your goals as real, worthwhile things. Work on one or two days per week if possible. And when you do achieve your goal, give yourself a pat on the back, smile, and say "hew". Your subconscious will then be saying "good job" and start to believe that your goal was achievable. Remember - motivation is a learned emotion, and it takes a little practice to get it just right.
