In spite of nine decades of its inception, there appears to be no proper consensus on the universal application of periodontal dressing following all the periodontal surgeries. Meanwhile the search for materials with better properties and optimum results continue. This review aims to explore the evidence-based literature on types, properties, uses, advantages and disadvantages, controversies and recent advances on periodontal dressings.

Dr. Ashwin Parakkaje Subramanya completed his undergraduation (Bachelor of Dental Surgery) from Government Dental College and Research Institute, Bengaluru. Currently, he is pursuing his final year Post Graduation (Master of Dental Surgery) in Periodontology at Krishnadevarya College of Dental Sciences and Hospital, Bengaluru. He has presented scientific papers in several conferences and published his works in national and international journals. He was awarded with Pierrie Fauchard Academy International Senior Student Award from PFA and Best Outgoing Student Award from GDCRI, Bengaluru for his academic accomplishments. He is also active in public awareness activities and engages himself in academic, research, literary and other co-curricular works.
Dr. Karthikeyan BV has completed his under graduation from KVG Dental College Sullia in 2000 and has topped the institution with the highest marks for which, he was awarded ‘Devakiamma Memorial Award’ for his academic excellence. He secured 14th rank in PGCET 2002 and went on to complete his Masters Degree in Periodontics from Govt. Dental College, Bangalore in 2006 and stood 5th in MDS university examination. Later he proceeded to complete Diplomate in National Board (DNB) in 2007 and Post Graduate Certificate in Implantology (P.G.C.O.I) in September 2012. He has obtained Masters in Laser Dentistry (MLD) from Vienna, Austria. Presently, he is working in Krishnadevaraya College of Dental Sciences as Reader and mentoring as a guide to postgraduate students. He is actively involved in several research works and so far, has published several articles in national and international journals. He was also awarded Rajya Puraskar by the governor of Karnataka for his service to mankind.
Dr. M L V Pravhuji completed his bachelor and master’s degree from M R Ambedkar Dental College, Bengaluru. He has 25 + years of experience in the field of Periodontics and Implantology. Currently, he is Professor and Head of Department of Periodontology at Krishnadevaraya College of Dental Sciences and Hospital, Bengaluru. He has been guiding several Post Graduate and Under Graduate students in his service. He has several scientific publications in national and international journals. He is an active member of Indian Dental Association and has served as President of IDA, Karnataka State. In addition, he is also a prominent member of Indian Society of Periodontology and Bangalore Academy of Periodontology.
