When She Got Raped

by Kunal Arora

Sitting inside an auto rickshaw I was waiting for all the positions to be occupied and let the rickshaw move. Then came a girl who was dressed quite well and had a lot of make-up on her face. She bowed her head looking at the temple near to the place where the auto was parked. She sat inside the auto and everybody started giving her tough looks. I looked at her and in no time I found that she is a transgender. The facial expressions and the type of make-up can very well tell that she belong to a different community. She sat next to me occupying very less space. Still there were some space in the auto which was created as nobody wanted to sit close to her but after sometime people occupied the space and the auto moved. I could see the rejection and feeling of aggression on the face of the commuters. She was aware of all the activities around her; it’s a thing she faces every moment. The guy next to me looked at me and smiled, pointing towards the girl. She was lost in herself and not at all interested in looking at the people inside the auto. I was fine sitting with her and had no bad feelings about her. For me she is a creation of God and deserves respect and love from others. She looked at me and I gave her a smile, that’s what I do every time whenever someone looks at me. She smiled back and again started looking outside. People moved down from auto at their destination and some other people occupied there space. Those who entered the auto looked at her and decided not to sit with her. She was observing the activities around her but had no words for them. She has kept quiet all throughout her life facing the violence, ignorance and hatred of people. At last the auto reached the final destination and we all moved out. She was in a great hurry; she took the money and handled it over to the auto driver without even looking at him. After she left the driver said, because of these people we suffer. We get no commuters as nobody wants to sit with them. They are horrible creatures; the abode of diseases. They spread diseases to others; ask for the money as if we owe them something. Don’t know why such things have been created by God to disturb others. People standing there nodded their head to whatever the driver and some even added their own things. Though I was getting quite late but after hearing all this I was terrified and shocked. People believe in God and still doubt his creation, abuse them, exploit them. There was a lot of truth in whatever the driver said, yes they ask for money, they curse others but who made them go on this way. Knowingly or unknowingly we as a society are responsible for their exploitation. Extreme hatred and rejection made them take the path that is not acceptable to us. I prayed to God to help it’s own creation facing such troubles and moved on. I never shared this with anyone. Others might think same about them. The next day again I reached Hanuman chowk for boarding an auto for Iffco Metro station. Standing outside the auto, I saw the same girl coming and along with her another girl. Both dressed very well and with heavy make-up. May be both were out for work, I don’t know where they work and what type of work they do. People there were gossiping that they are sex workers; they might be going to spread the disease to others, don’t know who will fall prey to them today. People are so desperate to have sex without protection and after that they blame others. Humans have become a complete paradox. The girls came close to the auto, bowed their heads looking at the hanuman temple praying for their good. This time they are not even allowed to sit inside the auto. The driver abused them, pushed them saying take some other auto. I won’t take you people with me. The people there enjoyed whatever happened and the girls were in complete shame. They didn’t utter a single word. Looking down and thinking something, they ignored whatever happened and started discussing something. They were not even interested in looking at others. I had pain in my eyes for them. I kept on gazing at the girls who lost their innocence and love at a very small age. The whole society curses them, runs away from them; they use them for getting physical satisfaction and in the end blame them if something goes wrong.

This is not just one scenario, it happens everywhere, in trains, buses, residential areas, even in public toilets. They can’t even use toilets. Do society really consider them as humans or not. It’s highly commendable that they have been facing the traumas from such a long time and still surviving. We blame them for many things but we are the ones who raped them off their childhood when they were thrown out from the house, everyday they are raped off their respect, they are raped off from the basic human rights. The thing which brings more plight is that, after being raped everyday there exists no law to safeguard them. They can’t file any case under any section.

We just have a tag of humans attached to us, the true meaning is lost. We really need to be human to understand the problems of others and give others respect and love they deserve. Just think of getting raped, so many things in just one day and you will able to understand the pain they face.
