The sad joker

by Srinidhi.R

He was a sad joker, who lived at the end of Isle Street, down a steep hill. He lived alone in a small old cottage with 3 windows overlooking the Isle cricket field. From the small windows everyday (in the morning) the joker would watch the kids play cricket and he would hear them scream and shout. He would watch them for a long time till they finish their game and after that the joker would shut the window and would slowly walk to the attic.
In the attic he would switch on the light and would open the door (from the attic to the outside) letting all the colorful butterflies out from the plants. After the butterflies fly away, the joker would water the plants slowly as usual. After the plants are watered, the joker would take out the balloons from the attic closet and would blow them sometimes and tie them to the hands of the statue of Cupid and would then walk out. After his bath, the joker would come back to the attic dressed in his joker costume (with his white makeup) he take out a few clay dolls from the closet (where he keeps his balloons) and he would place them erect on a nearby table. The joker would then take out 6 balls from his pockets and would perform jugglery and he would dance and sing balancing the balls in his hands. After this act, he would take the clay dolls from the table and put them back in the closet. The joker would then leave the attic again and he would go to his living room and he would take out the portrait of a smiling baby hung in the wall (the only portrait he had in the house) and he would look at the baby and make faces of different expressions. The joker after some time would hang the portrait back in the wall and would cry for some time remembering his baby he had lost in the circus. He would also remember a woman in a white veil (when he sees the baby's face), who once was his wedded wife and had later died of cancer.
The joker then would sing aloud a sad song remembering both of them and he would feel all the sorrow that surrounds him. For hours and hours he would sing sitting in the porch, seeing the people who walk on the road and the children who are playing in the field (that obviously do not care to see him or listen to his grief).
When evening comes the joker would go back to his house and would decorate the entire house with hundreds of candles in memory of his lost baby. If it rains the joker would go back to the window and he would watch the falling rain in the light of the candles and he would then stretch his hands like a bird that wishes to fly out to the open sky. He would then go to the bathroom and fall to the floor, wet with tap water and would try to swim like a whale that swims in a gigantic ocean. He would then go back to the attic and would try to gallop like a horse that runs swiftly in the forest. The joker then would open his mouth and would scream out loud when the thunder hits and his scream along with the thunder (for the neighbors) would sound deafening to hear. Sometimes during this time, the joker would see a cricket ball smash to his living room window, breaking the window pane. Sometimes he would hear the cries of an angry crowd gathered outside his home, when he had had shut the door. But the joker would not care to bother about all that happens outside. He would walk to his bedroom and cover him with a cozy rug and would slowly drift off to sleep.
Everyday he would experience this strange dream that comes to him when he sleeps. In his dream he would see a big castle with thousands of children and babies who will be eagerly waiting in the arena for the joker to perform. When the joker arrives everyone stands to welcome him. The joker then stands and performs his jugglery and makes everyone cheerful with his jokes. He would dance and sing in a comical way much to the delight of the crowd, during this time. After the show, the king and the queen would reward the joker with hundreds of gold coins which would be taken to the joker’s home in a carriage. The joker would arrive home in the carriage as the happiest man in the world, where his wife and his small son would come rushing out the door. It would start raining when the joker would again dance in the rain for some time with his son and wife and would open the cottage door taking them back home to his grand cottage along with his gold.
At this point of time the joker would wake up to see himself in bed and the sun shining brightly in the sky and he would reckon that it’s morning. He goes back to his small windows and would again start his day watching the kids play...
