This book was a doctoral thesis by Dr Sarakanam Srinivas titled Problemsofthe Dalits in Select Novels of IndianEnglish: AnAnalysisoftheRelationshipbetweenSocietyandLiterature. With a few necessary minor modifications, this thesis is now brought before the readers and researchers. The author attempted to study the problems of the Dalits reflected aesthetically in the select novels of Indian writings in English by employing the dialectical and historical materialistic method, also known as the Marxist method. The dialectical relationship between society and literature was traced in this book. While society (social phenomena) forms the basis for the production of literature, literature, one of several social institutions, causes societal changes. The chosen texts were interrogated, analysed, and assessed with this basic understanding. The author’s attempt to synthesise the ideas of Marx and those of Ambedkar is noteworthy in this book. This book would indeed interest researchers and those in social activism though the author employed the Marxist method with his then-limited understanding.
