अगस्त 15 बेशक हिंदुस्तान के इतिहास में एक निर्णायक दिन है, लेकिन यह उपन्यास भारतीय स्वतंत्रता संग्राम के इतिहास का आख्यान नहीं, बल्कि स्वतंत्रता-प्राप्ति के पहले के भारत और आधुनिक भारत के राजनीतिक एवं सामाजिक परिदृश्यों के परस्पर विरोधी अंतर को दर्शाने वाला उपन्यास है। इसमें दो कथावचक हैं; एक हैं कल्याणमजी जिनका जन्म 1922 अगस्त 15 को हुआ और जिन्हें महात्मा गाँधी के जीवन के अंतिम पांच वर्षों में उनके अंतरंग सचिव के रूप में कार्य करने का सुयोग मिला। दूसरी कथावचक हैं लेखक नीलकंठन द्वारा सृजित काल्पनिक पात्र सत्या जो नई सह्स्राब्दि 2000 अगस्त 15 के दिन पैदा हुई। भ्रष्टाचार में लिप्त आधुनिक युग के केंद्रीय मंत्री की भानजी होने के नाते वह कुर्सी के लिए हो रही धोखाधड़ी और राजनीतिक उठापटक की चश्मदीद है। नब्बे वर्ष के कल्याणम और तेरह साल की बालिका सत्या अपने-अपने युग के खुद देखे-सुने और अनुभव किये तथ्यों को बारी-बारी से बड़ी साफ़गोई के साथ बयान करते हैं। अलग-अलग परिस्थितियों में एक-दूसरे से अपरिचित इन दोनों पात्रों को ब्लॉग-स्पॉट की युक्ति से लेखक नीलकंठन ने परस्पर संवाद कराया है। सत्या की बयानगी में पात्र और घटनाएँ काल्पनिक हो सकते हैं, किंतु आधुनिक युग में व्यापक रूप से चल रही भ्रष्ट राजनीति, परस्पर अविश्वास और अमानवीय क्रूरताओं को प्रतिफलित करने के कारण सत्या की बयानगी भी कल्याणम के संवादों की भांति ऐतिहासिक यथार्थ ही है। लेखक ने एक के बाद एक खुलने वाले दोनों ब्लॉग-संवादों को आपस में गूँथ दिया है कि उपन्यास का वाचन करने वाले पाठक को त्वरित आवृति में घूमने वाला कोई श्वेत-श्याम चलचित्र देखने की अनुभूति मिलती है।
