Dr Jay Sankar Basu, currently working as Associate Professor of ELT in a Premier State University, is a published author. He pens his poems in the name of Jay Basu. His poetic vision encompasses a wide and uneven terrain. Where there is a murmur of sufferings, drops of tear or of yellowing leaf, he loves to dwell there, often with an undertone of satire or with philosophical overtones. At times we see in his poetry the footprints of eternity.

One of his books, Reality, Reader and Short Story : Aesthetics of Ellipsis and Epiphany found place among the twenty books listed from all over the world for the Christmas Blast of The New York Times, 2019. The value of universal love breezes gently, often with an undercurrent of suave satire on human follies, through his poems, unifying them into a family likeness.

The object-referents to the poet's thought process are variegated, gently swaying from contemporary issues to classical archetypes of self-quest, love and its primal manifestations, and god-contemplation. Tonally there are wide variations, from genial humour and satire to deep involvement in an observed phenomenon, to the point of empathy. The poems will hopefully stir the soul of a reader and make him rethink over accepted myths and motifs.

A deeper delve will underscore a stream of thoughts and impressions that crisscrosses a sprawling terrain with ripples of rhythm and ruminations that Jay Basu as a distinctively sensitive soul in quest of love, light, peace and harmony in an upturned world. Poetry here is the articulation of deep introspection over almost all the facets of experiential reality that stir the soul of man in space-time continuum. It prods the reader to stake his/her perception in the deep text to the point of deconstruction, and look for a higher language – a language that leaves a lingering impress on his/her mind and realign his/her perception vis-a-vis the fragments of life as experienced across borders and barriers. Tonal variations and attitudinal shifts that orchestrate with metaphoric echoes and symbolic undertones, mark the poetry of Jay Basu as typically modernist. Yet at the heart of his poetry there is a palpable angst, the melancholy of an eternal romantic and shooting flickers of spirituality. Poems here are supposedly delightful read.

It is the poet's preponderant quest and anst for cohering the splinters of human experience of life or of living on a rough and uneven terrain. Added to this quest is a longing, sometimes overt, at other places subtle and covert, for transcending the space-time matrix to reach out to eternity. Archetypally, Jay Basu's poetry registers the impression of an agonized journey to an unreachable ocean of love and timelessness.
Murmurs and rustles of soul that breeze across all borders, are distilled into Jay Basu's poems. They undulate on the waves that roll gently or at times buffet from the ocean of love beyond the apparent. The shadows of Time and Mortality loom the canvas, too often, in interplay with the Flickers of Passion in his poems. Both these art forms do not present an unveiled and stretched from start-to-end story or any human experience within brackets. Of course, these observations pertain to 20th century epiphanic and elliptical short narratives (that could be as peepingly short as the iceberg tip provoking a reader to call them “Iceberg Story”- the kinds Joyce or Mansfield wrote) and the modernist art film in the associational, non-linear and non-sequential form, first conceptualized and shown forth in his films by the Russian film-maker Sergei Eisenstein. The present study is a funnelled focus on the structural and modal affinities between the two.
