ক্যালকাটা, 'দ্য সিটি অফ জয়', পূর্বে কলকাতা নামে পরিচিত, ভারতের বৃহত্তম শহরগুলির মধ্যে একটি। শহরটি হুগলি (হুগলি) নদীর পূর্ব তীরে অবস্থিত, যা একসময় গঙ্গা (গঙ্গা) নদীর প্রধান চ্যানেল ছিল, বঙ্গোপসাগরের মাথা থেকে প্রায় ৯৬ মাইল (১৫৪ কিমি) উজানে।
কলকাতা শহরের নামের উৎপত্তি নিয়ে তিনটি মত আছেl কলিকাতা হল বাংলা নামের কালিকাতার একটি ইংরেজি সংস্করণ। কারো কারো মতে, 'কালিকাতা' বাংলা শব্দ কালীক্ষেত্র থেকে এসেছে, যার অর্থ কালীর ভূমি (দেবী)। যাইহোক, ব্রিটানিকার মতে, কেউ কেউ বলে যে শহরের নামটি একটি খালের (খাল) তীরের আসল বসতির অবস্থান থেকে উদ্ভূত হয়েছে।তৃতীয় মতানুযায়ী, শহরটির নাম বাংলা শব্দ থেকে এসেছে -- চুন (ক্যালসিয়াম অক্সাইড; কালী) এবং পোড়া খোল (কাটা), যেহেতু এলাকাটি খোসা চুন তৈরির জন্য বিখ্যাত ছিল।
ঔপনিবেশিক যুগে ১৬৮৬ সালের ২৪শে আগস্ট, জব চার্নক, যিনি কলকাতার প্রতিষ্ঠাতা বলে মনে করা হয়, তিনি একটি কারখানা স্থাপনের জন্য ব্রিটিশ ইস্ট ইন্ডিয়া কোম্পানির প্রতিনিধি হিসাবে প্রথম শহরে আসেন এবং স্থানীয় জমিদারের কাছ থেকে তিনটি গ্রাম (সুতানুটি, কলকাতা, গোবিন্দপুর) কিনে নেন। । শহরটি ১৬, ১৭ এবং ১৮ শতকে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ বাণিজ্য কেন্দ্র হিসাবে কাজ করেছিল। ব্রিটিশ রাজের সম্প্রসারণ পরিকল্পনার ফলে ১৬৮৬ সালে কলকাতা প্রতিষ্ঠিত হয়।
