In short, the book has been moulded with two major objectives, to serve as a textbook for teaching “irrigation and drainage” or “water management” and to serve as a handbook for those involved in research and extension activities related to water management in agriculture. The stress is, however, directed towards small holder irrigation in the tropics.

Plant breeders are striving to meet the challenge of increased production by developing plants with higher yield, resistance to pests, diseases and weeds and tolerance to various abiotic stresses. I have tried to give suitable examples of transgenic developed for various characters in one of the chapters so that a student is aware of the impact of biotechnology on crop improvement. In most of the chapters protocols for conducting laboratory exercises have been given. A very important point is that in most chapters emphasis is placed on application of a technique and its contribution and impact on crop improvement.

India has a euphoria for rural society. Our national leaders and great personalities such as Rabindra Nath Tagore, Gandhiji and Prem Chand had a great fascination for villagers. Rural sociologists and anthropologists have spent decades in accumulating data about village life. Whatever may be our status, we are all concerned with the development of our villages. Let us believe in the idiom given by Gandhiji—if our villages prosper, we also prosper, and if our villages go to ruin, who can save us?
The village society, so rich and diverse in its culture, is undergoing tremendous economic and cultural transformation owing to the massive developmental efforts. In our enthusiasm to make our villages self-sufficient and link them with a wider society at regional and national levels, we should be intelligent enough to understand thoroughly the rural society.
The present work contains the generalizations of the empirical findings in the form of evaluation and analysis given by sociologists. These conceptual abstractions would help students, trainees, agriculturists, social workers, NGOs, planners and politicians develop an insight for the rural people.

The UN Sustainable Development Goals 2015 provide for specific targets that can be achieved in the next 15 years. The emphasis is on “global partnership” involving collaboration between governments, the Major Groups such as women, children and youth, indigenous peoples, NGOs, local authorities, local communities and several other stakeholders. In the light of globalisation and modernisation, traditional knowledge systems and related resources are eroding among the younger generations, and there needs to be rapid intervention to prevent further loss for ensuring the continuity and sustainability of the economy, its resource base and social fabric. Using a variety of communication tools and channels can allow messages to shape mass media or interpersonal, small group, or community level campaigns. We need to move beyond traditional training and extension methods to listen to different stakeholders, especially from the communities, build on their knowledge, and thereby make the process both more creative and reciprocal.

The book brings together, in a given framework, information gained from different regions. The partner institutions involved in the primary studies at the state level under my coordination not only undertook a major burden of data collection but prepared at the regional levels, their own reports which could be extremely useful to any interested reader. Careful inspection, validation and consistency checks of the primary data have been essential components of this meta-analysis.

Agriculture is the backbone of Indian economy. In India, the competition in agricultural education is increasing day by day. The competitive examination is an only routine procedure of admission in Agricultural Universities, viz. Central Agriculture University (CAU), State Agricultural Universities (SAUs), Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI). The competitive examination is also an only routine procedure of recruitment in agricultural job/posts, viz. Agricultural Research Services, State PSC and UPSC. Thus, one has to prepare him/herself very strongly for these competition exams and for the success, need to read authentic and authorised reading materials. The knowledge of general agriculture is very essential for every competition exams related to agriculture. Many authors are attempted to compile the notes/books of general agriculture, in which, TNAU notes is well famous. Other books were also made impact on the readers. But still no book is there with authentic and authorised information. Therefore, I and my friends feel need to write this book. This book has been so as to serve, as best as possible to aim of writing this book.

We are not alone in holding this conviction: Agriculture Journalism studies is one of the fastest growing areas within the larger discipline of communication research and media studies. As indicated by a serious, though not altogether coherent body of academic literature and ongoing scholarly work, the study of journalism has matured to become an academic field of its own right. We felt that the arrival of Agriculture journalism studies ought to be both celebrated and solidified, and to honor this ambition, the book of Agriculture Journalism Studies was conceived as a gathering place for the varied lasting and emerging preoccupations of scholars in the field. This book therefore bears witness to the rapid and exciting developments within this important area of research, as well as its complexity, richness and promise in terms of theory and research. We hope the book can boost the intellectual foundations of journalism studies, providing the reader with an overview of journalism as a dynamic field of study across its diverse epistemological, theoretical and methodological traditions.

In order to cope-up with the present day requirement the agriculture graduates should be well versed with the concept of entrepreneurship. It is therefore, important that entrepreneurial education is systematically provided to rural youth in particular so that they may be able to establish enterprise providing employment to self and generating employment opportunities for others. It is in this context, there is need to familiarise the students and professionals with the concepts, methodology, techniques and organisations promoting entrepreneurship development.

Likewise, one should be proud of our agriculture as it has lot of inherited sustainable practices passed from one generation to other generation. And also, agriculture in India is not an occupation, it is way of life for many Indian populations. Hence the present-day generation should be aware the facts about our ancient and traditional agricultural systems and practices. This will enable us to build the future research strategy also.

In the initial chapter of this book, I have tried to bring out why there is an urgent need for the study of Rural Sociology in India.

The green shoots of entrepreneurship give an economy its vitality. They give rise to new products and services, fresh applications for existing products and services, and new ways of doing business. Entrepreneurship stirs up the existing economic order and prunes out the dead wood.
