This was a time of close and frequent interaction between family members and friends. Not that feuds and sharp differences of opinion did not occur. But, in times of crisis all differences were forgotten, and family closed ranks and stood in undivided solidarity This generosity of spirit was reflected in the lifestyle and somewhat lavish culinary habits of the Bengali families of those times.
Nostalgia comes more sharply into focus in the second half of the book called, "Amma's Rannaghor". Here are recipes contributed by my daughter Ayesha Fuchs from the handwritten recipe book she inherited from her grandmother Mrs. Kalyani Mukerji she called Amma. Certain recipes here have also been included from the repertoire her great grandmother Mrs. C.R. Das who was a renowned and talented cook of her times.
