Dr. Raj Gopalaswamy is currently Global Technology Director of Global R&D at Novelis, part of the Aditya Birla Group of companies. He was born in Chennai and studied in Chennai and Trichy in Tamil Nadu, India before heading to engineering college at BITS, Pilani in Rajasthan, India. He then traveled to the United States and went through rigorous science and engineering education and graduated with an MS in Engineering Mechanics from Missouri Science & Technology (Rolla), a PhD in Engineering Science & Mechanics from Penn State University, and an MBA in Economics & Finance from The University of Chicago's Booth business school.
Since childhood Raj has been interested in knowing more about ancient Indian scriptures and culture. He has also been interested in understanding the real purpose of science, philosophy and religion in the progress of human thought and their roles in defining world history and development. Having trained to think as a scientist, Raj has always contemplated whether science and philosophy could somehow mesh into a blended science to bring about a unification rather than divergence in thoughts, words and deeds. In listening to and making an effort to deeply understand The Bhagavad Gita and The Upanishads, he finally had the epiphany that this not only could be done but must be done to progress ourselves as a species on this planet. Such a convergence will help to progress modern scientific thought, especially to answer questions on how to unify the four known fundamental forces: by using the Vedantic Science of Consciousness (from The Upanishads).
More importantly, in thinking through these questions, Raj has realized that starting with mental fortitude, a feeling of fulfillment, fearlessness, and a focused life full of purpose can be achieved by listening and following even a fraction of the teachings in The Gita and The Upanishads. In the process he has become an ardent seeker of the Ultimate Truth, through listening to the lectures and having the blessings of Swami Guruparananda. He considers his friend Rajesh Sengamedu (who read through and edited this book) as his meditation guru and guide, all his friends in the Gita Satsang discussion group as co-seekers and a great source of inspiration for this work. The blessings of his father and mother and elders of the family, and his enduring relationships with all his friends and family from Chennai, Trichy, Pilani, Rolla, State College, Chicago, Atlanta and elsewhere are strong enablers of a fulfilling life for him. He lives in Atlanta with his wife Meenu and their children Maya and Sanjay, and eagerly looks forward to continuing his journey as a seeker.
