Sukhendu Chatterjee

The author was born on 19 September 1938, in Giridih, in present day Jharkhand, India. His father, Shri Bholanath Chatterjee, was the head of the British India Meteorological Department of Andaman & Nicobar Islands. His mother, Shrimati Shobhana Devi, was the niece of the famous Bengali novelist, Shri Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay. The author was born on 19 September 1938, in Giridih, in present day Jharkhand, India. His father, Shri Bholanath Chatterjee, was the head of the British India Meteorological Department of Andaman & Nicobar Islands. His mother, Shrimati Shobhana Devi, was the niece of the famous Bengali novelist, Shri Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay.
In 1960, he completed his Bachelor of Arts from Erving Christian College, Allahabad. After his master’s in economics from Allahabad University in 1962, he joined Allahabad University and subsequently Saint Peter’s College, Kolkata, as lecturer in Economics.
In 1965, he joined the Indian Civil Services of the Government of India and was attached to the Customs and Central Excise Department. Prior to his retirement in 1997, he served the Government of India through his postings in Kolkata and Delhi. Later in his life, these postings were instrumental in motivating him to work on this book which presents a collage of information on Delhi the city, drawing also on the shifting of the capital of India from Calcutta. He was very active in social service and with his friends formed the Noida Bengali Cultural Association in 1983, now a reputed platform for Bengalis in Delhi NCR.
