Shantha Thiagarajan was born in Ooty in the Nilgiris, spent her formative years in this hill station during her school and college days. She started her career as a banker and spent 18 years as a successful banker. Her love for the Nilgiris and her keen interest in writing and reading made her take up the job as a journalist. In her current capacity, she is the District Correspondent – The Times of India for the Nilgiris. She loves music. Damal Krishnaswamy Pattammal (DKP) was born on March 19, 1919, in Tumbhavana, Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu to Rajammal and Krishnaswamy. Her father was a Sanskrit teacher at the time of her birth.

Pattammal was the first woman in her community to appear on stage and perform music, challenging all the prevailing customs which would not permit women from Brahminical families to perform in public.

She further rose to the occasion of the freedom movement
