ലിവര്‍പൂളില്‍ നിന്ന് മാഞ്ചസ്റ്ററിലേക്ക് പോകുന്ന തീവണ്ടിയില്‍ യാത്ര ചെയ്ത ദിവസം ചെമ്മരിയാടുകള്‍ മേഞ്ഞുനടക്കുന്ന പുല്‍മേട്ടില്‍ എവിടെയോ ഞാന്‍ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു എന്ന് തോന്നാന്‍ തുടങ്ങിയപ്പോള്‍, ഗ്ലാസ്സ്‌ ജാലകങ്ങള്‍ക്കുള്ളില്‍ നിന്ന് കാണാമായിരുന്ന ആ പഴയ വീട്ടില്‍ നെരിപ്പോടിനടുത്ത്‌ തീ കാഞ്ഞ് ഞാനും ഒരിക്കല്‍ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നെന്ന് തോന്നിയപ്പോള്‍, നോട്ടിംഗ്ഹാമിലെ ക്ലിഫ്ടനില്‍, ശരത്കാലവൃക്ഷങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് താഴെ നടന്നപ്പോളെല്ലാം പുതിയ നിറങ്ങളും പുതിയ മണവുമുള്ള ഒരു ബാല്യകാലം കൂടി എനിക്ക് കൈ വന്നു.

ആദ്യമായിക്കണ്ടപ്പോള്‍ ഭീമാകാരമായ ഒരു പാറയാണ് പഴയ എഡിന്ബ്ര എന്ന് തോന്നി. ഗുഹകളും, തുരങ്കങ്ങളും ഉള്ള ഒരു പാറ. ആകാശം കാണാന്‍ പറ്റാത്ത മേല്‍ക്കൂരകളുള്ള ഇടനാഴികളില്‍ കൂടി നടന്ന്, വളഞ്ഞും പിരിഞ്ഞുമുള്ള കോണിപ്പടികള്‍ ചവിട്ടിക്കയറി എത്തുന്ന വീടുകള്‍. നഗരമധ്യത്തിലെ തുരങ്കങ്ങളില്‍ നിന്നു പുറത്തേക്ക് വരുന്ന തീവണ്ടികള്‍. കുറുക്കനെപ്പോലെ ഓരിയിട്ട് വതിലുകളിലും ജാലകച്ചില്ലുകളിലും നിര്‍ത്താതെ മുട്ടുന്ന രാത്രിക്കാറ്റ്.

ലിത്വാനിയയിലെ വില്‍നിയസില്‍ താമസിച്ച ഹോട്ടലിനടുത്തുള്ള തെരുവുകള്‍ രാവിലെ വിജനമായിരുന്നു. ഒന്ന് കറങ്ങി വരുമ്പോളും നഗരം ഉറക്കം മതിയാക്കിയിരുന്നില്ല “നീയെപ്പോഴും നിന്നിടത്തു തന്നെ നില്‍ക്കുന്നതെന്തിനാ?” എന്ന് ‘ദി പോപ്ലാര്‍’ എന്ന കവിതയില്‍ റിച്ചാര്‍ഡ്‌ ആര്‍ലിംഗ്ട്ടന്‍ ചോദിച്ചത് പോലെ നടപ്പാതയില്‍ എങ്ങും പോകാതെ കാവല്‍ നില്‍ക്കുന്ന മരങ്ങള്‍. അവിടവിടെ പൂക്കള്‍; പഴയ കെട്ടിടങ്ങള്‍. ഒരു കെട്ടിടത്തിനു മുകളില്‍ ജനല്‍പ്പടിയില്‍ ചെറിയ ഒരു പ്രതിമ.

ഭൂട്ടാനില്‍ കുറച്ചു ദിവസങ്ങള്‍ തങ്ങി തിരിച്ചു വരുമ്പോള്‍ ആദ്യം മനസ്സില്‍ വരുന്നത് ഇന്ത്യയോടുള്ള ബഹുമാനമാണ്. ഇന്ത്യയുടെ സത്തയോടുള്ള ആദരവ്. ഇവിടുത്തെ തിരക്ക് പോലും ഇന്ത്യ വ്യത്യസ്തമാണെന്ന് കാണിച്ചു തരുന്നതാണെന്ന സത്യം.
