Smt. Indira (1918–1999) was born in Madras and later shifted to Mayiladuthurai (erstwhile Mayavaram) after her marriage to V Swamy Iyengar. For the next three decades, she perfected the art of South Indian cooking and played host to a steady stream of guests and visitors in their family home. Her gracious hospitality and her superb cooking became legendary. She later relocated to Chennai in 1970 and, urged by family and friends, captured her culinary knowledge and experience in a Tamil book containing traditional South Indian recipes, rendered in a style that was unfussy and accessible.
