He went on to take a foundational academic and administrative leadership role at Amrita University, where he served as the founding Principal at Amrita School of Engineering (Coimbatore). Under his guidance, Amrita’s engineering school grew in stature and scope, becoming a strong institution within Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham.
Along with his administrative and educational leadership and research in his chosen field of Hydraulics and Water Resources, he has guided many aspirants in their doctoral programs. He has authored many international publications and books. His career reflects a strong blend of scholarly accomplishment, institution building, and mentorship of students over decades.
Dr. Pillai 's uncle was a disciple of Atmananda Krishna Menon and from his early days has been studying the life and philosophy of Gurunathan from his uncle. His books, “Hinduism – Some Cardinal Principles” and “Atmananda Krishna Menon – Direct Path to Realization: ‘I’ Principle”, reflect his deep engagement with the essence of Advaita Vedanta.
Dr. Pillai’s life stands as a rare synthesis of the academic and the spiritual — a journey where disciplined inquiry meets inner realization.
Rajeev Narayanan, trained as an engineer, evolved into leadership roles in various MNC’s that bridged technology, business strategy, and operational excellence. He is a strategist by vocation and a seeker by temperament — a professional who sees the outer world of enterprise as deeply connected with the inner discipline of awareness and the reflective depth of a philosopher. His leadership has been shaped not only by business outcomes but by a commitment to coherence — aligning vision, people, and purpose into a shared rhythm of progress.
Beyond the metrics of performance, Rajeev’s focus rests on the human side of endeavour — fostering collaboration, trust, and self-understanding within teams and individuals. Deeply influenced by the teachings of Advaita Vedanta and the timeless insights of Sanatana Dharma, he views work as a field for awareness in action, where clarity and compassion can coexist. His fields of interest explore the nature of consciousness, reality, and self-knowledge, blending curiosity with contemplative stillness.

In his earnest search for a true Guru, his prayers were answered when his Guru from Calcutta appeared and accepted him as a disciple. Under his Guru’s subtle guidance, Atmananda undertook sincere sādhana in bhakti, yoga, and jñāna. Within four years, through his Guru’s grace, he realized the Supreme Truth and was bestowed the name Atmananda.
Spiritual seekers, both Indian and foreign, came to him for instruction. In his discourses, Atmananda blended rigorous reasoning with profound simplicity, illuminating how deep sleep and the intervals between thoughts serve as direct gateways to the natural state of the Self (Ātma). His essential philosophy is distilled in two concise works: Atma Darshan and Atma Nirvriti.
Among his devoted disciples, Sri K.A. K. Karunakaran, gifted with an extraordinary memory, faithfully recorded Atmananda’s talks verbatim, in the first person. The compilation, meticulously organized by Dr. N. Narayana Pillai and Sri Rajeev Narayanan, preserves the purity of the Master’s voice. It stands as both a record of rare philosophical brilliance and a luminous guide to Self-realization, inviting every earnest seeker to discover the eternal truth:
The Self alone is real.
