He began his teaching career as a lecturer and worked as Assistant professor, Associate professor and professor in the Maulana Azad Medical College and Lady Hardinge Medical College which are the premier medical institutions of the country. He worked in Lady Hardinge Medical College, New Delhi as Director-Professor and head of the Department of Radiotherapy and Oncology and is the founding head of the Department of Radiotherapy and Oncology, established at Lady Hardinge Medical College, New Delhi. He is the recipient of WHO fellowship and a life member of many scientific bodies. Dr. Saxena has been an examiner for MD and DNB examinations. He has been an expert in the UPSC and the State Public Service Commissions for the selection of medical faculty. Dr. Y.K. Saxena was deputed as an expert by the Government of India and the Medical Council of India, for the inspection of a large number of medical institutions of the country.
